Hi there,

I've had a frequently very noisy SBC since I purchased the car last October.

Now I have a brake service workshop message on my dash and the following codes have been read from a snap on system:-

P2000 Brake Pressure Implausible

P2010 CAN Communication is Faulty

C249E Terminal 87 under voltage

C225F Event: ABS control

C25D8 Inspect wheel brakes for mechanical faults

930C Knowledge Base Configuration Incomplete

9382 CAN Communication ...................etc
9384 CAN Communication ......................etc

If anyone could read this and advise me on what I should do next I would be very grateful.

Just to note, the battery isn't great as sometimes when very cold in the morning, the car only just started and it switched off the comfort controls temporarily? Not sure if that attributes to the low voltage errors?

Kind regards

An old or degenerating battery can throw up all sorts of faults so would recommend a replacement. As for the codes, they are not much use in themselves-needs to go onto STAR diagnostics. Click on MB Club…..etc on top left and find an independent specialist near you with STAR.

The low voltage will throw all sorts of errors, inc comms.

1. Replace battery (ies)
2. Sort brakes themselves. The check mechanical bit can be warped discs etc.

clear codes. Check again.

I think I'm probably be better off replacing the battery so I'll order one on Monday however, can you tell me if the snap on code reader (£3500 worth so I'm told) be able to reset all the codes?

If so, why do I read that STAR is absolutely necessary for diagnosing etc??

The snap on will clear and read codes, in fact my 300 quid version does that, but star is far far more accurate

Snap on is better for fault diagnosis than Star and was my weapon of choice for fault finding much more user friendly and accurate than star you can home in in faults and get to the faulty component much quicker the only thing Star can do over snap on us developer mode and coding

That is very interesting as my local garage guy has the snap on plug in machine but he isn't very well trained on how to use it, in fact in the Stockport area there's a guy that he calls in to diagnose technical faults with the same equipment and he's apparently a bit of a wizard at problem solving!

So if I replace the battery then get the codes reset and see what faults come back, this should be the first step?

My experience sort of contradicts this.

Snap on kit is easier for anyone to pick up and use. Star takes time to learn and use properly. In nearly every module there are lots of things that Star can do that no other system can. Some of the guided tests are extremely helpful.

Problem with Star is it very often misdiagnoses so you normally change more than one component before sorting the fault. Put snap on in dynamic mode go for a drive and look at live data and you can spot what's wrong instantly. If you are running a business and time is money snap on will get you there a lot faster than star and enhance profits

A star can do much more than the snap on kit. I have used both.
It is all in the user. You can read all the live data you need on a Star.

Totally agree with you dealer level diagnostics are usually not very intuitive which I find the case with Star, I am an expert on vagcom which is much more user friendly than star and I wouldn't dream of using anything else on VW. But Star just takes too much time hence my preference for snap on

Vagcom is so unrefined and archaic it's a joke in the motor trade.

Star is all about the user. It took me years to learn it but it's leaps and bounds above VagCom. I have used both extensively.

VAG are ten years behind Mercedes-Benz

vagcom is simple that's it's beauty even taught my daughter how to use it. Agree with you in Star it takes years to learn and that's it's failing but if you can invest the time to learn, a good expert user like yourself is worth their weight in gold

Will have to disagree with you about VAG though their technology is light years ahead of MB particularly the new hybrid technology no SCR on VAG cars just good solid engineering and electronic technology,

VAG is not light years ahead. It's light years behind.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. As a side I will be in Germany in May testing a new VAG car against the new C63 bi turbo. VAG car has KERS and scaled down versions of F1 technology in terms of paddle shift gearbox also uses the battery and motor side of things to provide performance boost and add an extra 100bhp when needed. I think that's pretty innovative technology and the first time it will have ever been seen on a road car. I'll report back at your GTG
