05 C Class Coupe C200k
Hi All,

Thinking of buying a 2005 C Class Coupe C200k with 87k miles.

I was all set to go then stumbled over a thread about timing chain issues, then a further search found many many more.

I still like the car and not sure about a diesel as they'll probably bring their own more expensive set of problems at this mileage ?

Is the timing chain problem as bad as all that considering the amount of these engines on the road ?

What noises/things should I be checking for with this car to maybe indicate problem, I read they rattle a bit on startup anyway.

Thanks for any help !

If engines are looked after correctly they are fine. If neglected problems occur. This is why in my view full M-B or a known indie service history is a must.

The timing chain can snap or jump a cog due to poor design and build.

It would typically happen at around 100k miles and when it does the cost of repair or replacement engine can scrap an older car.

Said that, if the timing gear is replaced pre-emptively with modified gear and new chain then the cost it not too high and the engine is good for another 100k.

In your case, with a car that has ~90k miles on the clock, if the timing gear has not been replaced then I would budget to get this done.

Another potential issue is leaking camshaft position sensors (CPS), which means that engine oil can reach tbe ECU via the wiring loom.

Unplug both CPS connectors from the engine head and check that they are dry. Also, you can very easily fit modified connector plugs that will eliminate this problem (it will not eliminate the leak, but it will prevent any escaped oil from going up the wiring loom).

Thanks for the replies !

How much am I looking to have the chain replaced if the gears are ok ?

Is there any tell tale sounds that I should be listening out for to know that it's maybe needing looked at asap ?!

Any other general nasties I should have a look for when I go to see it ?
