2005 CLS 350
Good day,

Does anybody know much about the 2005 CLS 350 which had the 272 engine?

I have taken possession of one that is low km and runs fine but need to know a few things:

1. Should I be proactive and replace the balance shaft and solenoids?

2. Should I just drive it as it is good until the issue pops up?

3. Has anybody fixed the balance shaft and there was no issues thereafter?

4. Was the engines in the CLS designed a bit better and therefore less susceptible to the 272 issues?

Thank you

My CLK has same motor, 3ltr version #2 The EML lights up to give you a warning.
If it does go 2-2500£ to fix according to my Indie a few years ago.

Thanks Slade,

Did you require this repair and how many kms on the odo thus far?

I also take it you have the 7 speed transmission, I was reading this too was problematic... have you experienced any major repairs in this capacity?

Many thanks in advance!

No, the motor is whisper quiet, 83K with many short trips, frequent starts.
The car has a service/MOT every regardless of mileage, one trip a year saves a lot of agro.
Had new electroplate for gearbox at around 55K

I have the same 3.5 m272 engine and 7g transmission in my 2006 c350. The electroplate in the transmission was replaced by a previous owner at around 40k miles (from memory it cost them about £1,600). I haven’t had any issues with it, I had it serviced at a merc specialist at the proper interval to keep it happy.
No issues so far with the balance shaft and I’m now on 105k miles. Personally I would just enjoy the car and deal with it if/when it becomes necessary. Maybe it never will. Good to be prepared for that possibility though.

It was at a main dealer so…
