2005 CLS Sat Nav - lose map but voice continues

I have a 2005 CLS 350 fitted with Comand NTG1 satnav (dvd). Some strangeness is happening with the satnav. During a journey, the map display will go blank and I give me a message that it can’t read the DVD. The voice directions continue and after a while the map display will return, only to disappear again at random. The continued voice direction seems to be correct and when the map reappears, it places me correctly.

What is going on? I have asked a dealer to investigate during a service, but to say they were disinterested in an understatement.

If you've got a fake map disk, then replace it with a genuine one. If you have a genuine one and it still does this, then the laser needs cleaning in the nav drive.

Hopefully not the nav drive, as £3k new from MB, a lot less from comandonline.co.uk though
