Hi I have a 2005 ML270 cdi with a strange problem, when driving normally it drives fine with no issues but when you go uphill or accelerate hard as the revs go up it cuts out for a split second then carries on accelerating, on some steeper hills it will cut out a couple of times in a row but it does not go into limp mode and it will carry on driving normally. Recently I was towing my caravan on a steep hill on the m5 and I accelerated to pass a slower moving truck and it cut out several times in a row (I was doing about 60 and I tried to maintain speed while passing the truck) but the weird thing is it never goes into limp mode. Any advice would be welcome

Fitted a New Bosch fuel Filter from ECP last month the problems been happening around 2 months now.
Mrs Eldomix complains of a faint smell of Diesel coming from the heater outlets inside the car when its cold which will happen occasionally but ive never experienced this happening tbh I think she may have lost confidence in the car

Oh Oh. This is not good, but understandable. Mrs M's W203 just died with no warning in the outside lane of the M2 at 70+mph in rush hour traffic. That was caused by blocked fuel filter that caused the fuel pump to burn out/seize.

Fuel Starvation is not easy to diagnose as it tends to give zero errors (in itself) unless it triggers another component to error, as a result of no fuel being received. It may be worth getting the car on STAR to see if anything is throwing errors. Or looking for fuel leakage around the injectors. I have learned from hard experience that when Mrs M says it's wrong? She is always right and it is wrong.

Take it to the specialists to read the codes or get yourself an obd error code reader. If the fuel filter has been changed recently it might be that some of the fuel pressure sensors is in fault. Whatever it is it will be recorded in error codes history.

Sounds a bit strange;

Does it smoke heavily when you accelerate hard?
Is it easy to start after it cuts out?
Is the idle smooth or lumpy?

Take the engine cover off and check around the injectors, is it all clean or black? Diesel fumes through the vents can be a sign of a leaking injector.

Let us know!

As said by 91dm above. Fumes through the vents is a no no. It is likely that it is leaking out (what you smell) and probably letting air in to the fuel system. Again. This may NOT be picked up as an error unless it is triggering some other behaviour further up the cycle.

little puff of black smoke when you accelerate hard nothing to scary
it loses power for a split second then goes back to normal acceleration its as if you let off the pedal then press it again it does not switch off or go into limp mode
no sign of black death or any other leaks i run with engine cover off anyway for easy access
Idle and performance otherwise is spot on
ocasionally when starting hot it will turn over a bit longer than normal (about 4 seconds cranking. normally it starts instantly)

What mileage is on the jeep and has it ever had injector trouble?

Have you plugged the ML in to check any temp codes even if it's not in limp mode.

Is there any signs of air bubbles in the diesel pipes (from the filter to the pump)?

Bit of an update- Filled the car up to the max with diesel at the weekend as i was doing a long trip and it behaved itself all day with no issues on hills or at full accelaration untill it got to just under a quarter of a tank of fuel then it started playing up like before, im going to check the fuel tank sender when i get chance and if thats ok i will change the low pressure fuel pump

It's worth checking all the fuel pipes while you are at it for air bubbles and get it all sorted at the same time. At least you've narrowed it down!

Hi bit of an update on this, we nursed the car and put up with the issues untill December when the Turbo bearings failed which made the impeller blade dig into the side of the Turbo housing. I fitted a secondhand Turbo with a new CHRA and the car drives better than ever and is now pretty good on fuel. I did check the old Turbo for bearing play about a month before it destroyed itself and it seemed ok:dk:
