Hi,

I have a W211 E320 CDI which has just failed it's MOT on emissions. The car passed the smoke test with a reading of 0.02 when the limit was 1.50 but the tester said it had failed due to the excessive visible amount of smoke and stopped the test at that point.

I was unaware the car was smoking but it appears that when left to for 10-15mins (as happened when doing the MOT) it starts to bellow white/blue smoke. Can anybody suggest what the problem might be?

Also, the tester said there was a problem with the brake pedal going too far down and being spongy, although I think it passed the test. I changed all the pads and disks a couple of months ago and I haven't noticed any change in the performance or feel of the breaks since I brought the car a year ago. Could this be something to do with the way the SBC system feels or is there a problem?

Thanks for you help.

If it's blue it's oil burning.

Possibly a worn turbo.

Thanks for the info Black C55 - I wondered if it was a turbo issue - the car occasionally stutters under hard acceleration which I understand is caused by a problem with an actuator on the turbo. I've also just found our the car is reporting a fault: P2A00 which is an upstream O2 sensor. Am I right in thinking this is a Lambda sensor and that there is only one on the OM642 engine?

Many thanks,

Hello, have you resolved your smoke problem ?

Please help me, i have the same problem

Hi Gokdag,

Sadly the problem is not fully resolved. I took the turbo off and had it rebuilt and also replaced the inlet shutoff motor (the shutoff motor had failed and I don't think was related to the smoking problem). I'd also taken off the EGR pipe that comes up from the bottom/front of the engine and given that a clean, although it wasn't particularly dirty.

The turbo had a missing vane on the inlet turbine and the actuator was playing up, so it needed sorting. The car runs a lot better now, with a lot less smoke but still, when left to idle for a long period (10 mins +) it starts to smoke heavily - the smoke is white/grey.

what do you do now to solve the problem? what is wrong in your opinion?
I bought a new turbo , I'll change it in a few days.

You have to change your entire turbo ??

I do not think of having an used(worn out) piston(valve) because my engine works as a clock

Have you fixed the brake problem ? Is your brake fluid low could be failed master cylinder leaking brake fluid in to servo then sucked into engine could be way off but thought might help
