A little update on this:

Basically M-B spotted a manufacturing defect with the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) fitted to the OM642 3.0 V6 CDI diesel engine between approx. January 2006 and December 2007. In November 2008 they issued recall P117 for the M, C, CLK, E, CLS, S, R and G Class ... all of which which had the CPS replaced:

Unfortunately in the UK the W639 Vito and Viano were not included in this recall, so if you have one with the V6 built between those dates that hasn't failed yet you have this to look forward to. Mine went a couple of weeks ago at 62k miles - no warning whatsoever, the engine just stopped dead and couldn't be restarted. The bill to repair came to £377 (two callout visits required) and M-B refused to consider even a partial goodwill payment despite it being a known issue (I've owned the vehicle from new, and it has FMBSH). Not impressed.
If you have a vehicle that might be affected I would suggest getting the CPS part no. checked at the next service as having it replaced while it's already in the garage should be a minor cost/inconvenience. Having the engine stop dead in the outside lane of a motorway wouldn't be funny.
