Hello all,

I just bought a 2006 facelift S211 e280 CDI with 130k and full service history.

My plan for new owner maintenance is:
  • Change the oil and filter as a matter of course, and to stop my Dad saying "lifeblood of the engine" at me over and over until I do.
  • Change the tailgate struts.
  • Stop the front ashtray cover sticking down.
  • Find where the rattle in the back cabin is coming from.
Are there any other checks or maintenance people would recommend?

It's had regular MB and independent servicing and had the rear air suspension replaced last year. However, I can't find any record of a gearbox oil change.

Here's my VIN: Mercedes-Benz E 280 CDI 2006-07-05 - WDB2112202B006431

In my experience, rear diff oils are often pretty bad condition, change engine air filters annually (service program it is done only every 2nd year and they really looks like 'filtered' ). It has parametric steering, check the condition of power steering fluid too. Do a 'self service' to air struts compressor, change filter and check condition of dryer beads. Also check wires near the connector. Even you will have 'conventional' brake system, brake lines are still same crap - they corrode back near the calipers, where lines go front behind trims and make bends.

I got my gearbox serviced even though it had only done 30k. It wasnt bad before but definitely smoother after it was done. Plus I am keeping the car for a long time. I love the sound and pull of my e280cdi w211. Recommend you keep using a local merc indie for anything you cant manage yourself. Enjoy 👍

- PCV (Pressure control valve) is prone to failure, there is an upgraded model with better seals and piping. I got mine for £75 delivered gen MB part from german ebay. Approx £120 in UK dealership - if this has not been replaced I would do it.
- Turbo intake seal - should be changed at every air filter service (best practice) and it never is. This seal if leaking will crud up your turbo vanes and also leak onto the swirl flap motor down below and potentially cause it to fail. Part is £10 from MB, be careful when changing and removing the 'Bat' which houses the air filters.
-Turbo output seal (green seal|) also worth doing
-Check for leaking injectors regularly (if airboxes are off for service etc)
-Remap it and enjoy :D

I love mine, such a versatile car. With it mapped (conservatively) it'll put out slightly more than a e320 cdi so you won't feel short changed.

You have Ian at Star Mercedes , Reading , if you get stuck (independent specialist)
