Went to see a 2007 ML63 with 105Kmiles, nice car great nick but the air compressor making a hissing sound when the engine turned off. I also need to know where the engine number is as its not on the logbook SO I CAN CHECK RE HEAD BOLTS.

A 2007 M156 will have the earlier type head bolts, but you need to check the service history if you’re concerned about them and whether they have already been done.

Thanks for the card, looks like a good spec even has the heads up display but looks like the cut of point is 6038 for bolts so a deffo check.

the hissing is a concern but could just be levelling after start ad parking, she also needs 4 tyres

The car is up at £14K give or take so wondering what a safe offer would be!

Head up display on a 164? Never heard of that before! Probably an error on the VIN decoder site I would think. Happy to be proven wrong though :)

The revised head bolts came in around 2010/2011 so a 2006 built car is years before the changeover. I am sure forum member @Bobby Dazzler has posted quite a comprehensive list of potential stuff to consider on these cars before - it’s not just the head bolts that can be an issue.

Is the hissing a release of air? If so then this is normal on the W164 ML 63, it makes a hiss as the car lowers into it’s parking position. If the hissing is when the pump is running then that will need investigation.

Has it had any preventative maintenance performed? At 105k miles you’re right on the cusp of the known weak spots manifesting as issues - cam lobe wear and bucket wear.

If it’s recently had the heads off and checked it will give you some reassurance. What’s the service history like, any gaps or missed additional items by age or mileage?

Tyres aren’t too much of a concern as even tyres for the factory upgraded wheels aren’t horrendously expensive. Check the disks and pads though, expect £1700 from a marque specialist.

At 105k miles they should have been done recently or should be due. I replaced mine at 109k, and they had covered 70k miles. If you replace them (£1700) then you’ll probably never replace them again, expensive though.

PS the W164 didn’t come with HUD so as Will suggests that’s probably a VIN decoding error.

And to add to the mix i have now found a163 55 ML with only 95K miles! for half the money!

Chalk and cheese to a degree. The ‘55 engine is pretty much bombproof but the 163 is known to suffer badly from rust.

I’m not sure if I would want to spend £7k on a 163, personally :)

I have been lucky enough to have each generation, and there’s a reason I don’t have the W163 still.

Lovely charming cars but the W164 ML 63 is easily worth the premium over a W163 ML 55.

W164 isn’t far behind the W166 in any dimension you pick, the W163 is a very long way behind in every dimension.

That’s not a criticism, I really like the W163, but I am odd like that. At £2k great car, at £7k not so.

Unfortunately the W163 is nowhere near as good, nor should we expect it to be - it was launched 25 years ago.
