Much as I can appreciate the engineering and technical advances in automotive development etc, am I completely alone in thinking they're overlooking something very fundamental here in car design with this latest offering? Irrespective of all the aforementioned tweaks and refinements, they have completely overlooked the fact that the R230 was once a very pretty car, and from all angles, inclucing the AMG variant. Shame the same can’t be said of the 2008 offering. :(

JMHO :)

I've never liked white cars and that just proves my point. In a dark colour that car would look mean and magnificent, in white it just looks bloated and ungainly.

The R230 is the most elegant SL to date, it's a shame these new angular designs have become fashionable.

The SL is not an aggressive sports car it's a gentile sports tourer and the mean aggressive look just doesn't suit it. To me it looks like it's trying to be something it isn't.

On the flip side, this is perfect for the SLK which is in every sense a small powerful sports car...the SL should be it's grown up more adult big brother.

Oh good it's not just me being an old fart and not just getting it! :o There's an old saying "don't fix what's not broken" I believe they should've applied that rule of thumb here.

I have not found a forum yet where anyone likes it, I wonder if this will push the replacement through quicker, that is due 2010-11

Agreed; that should send a loud message to the powers that be.
Anyone seen any concepts for the 2010-11 replacement?

I am a huge fan of the Mercedes SL and didn't like the facelifted R230 at all when I saw the pictures. However, I had the pleasure of seeing an SL63 at the gym the other day and it looks alot better in the metal. The 63 that I saw was in a dark grey, I guess supporting the view that it suits darker colours better. Which suits me just fine... can I have one in Obsidian Black please :-)

Ugly is the new 'pretty'.

Don't think any new generation MBs will carry the soft lines of previous models anymore. It's all about presence and aggression these days (just like BMWs, Audis and Lexus).

The W204 C63 says it all.

Agreed. I think the SL would look much better in Black. Can't think who would want one in white.

Its OK having an ugly front, but the front must match the sides and the rear, nothing much has been done to the sides other than the front apron being rounded off at the bottom corners, and the rear, under the bumper.

Not sure on the colours, the MB world ones were not in black, but the stock one in MB Exeter is. The alli trim inside is now Matt flat alli and the steering wheel is smaller, as for the fan heater head rest a big no no from me. I have never had a draught in the neck yet in mine

I think beauty will always be in the eye of the beholder. One man's SL might well be another man's CLS  :o

If I had to choose between either the CLS or the new shape SL and I had to have one or the other then it would undoubtedly be an SL (in a nice light metallic blue with a light interior :D)

regards
John

And it would have to be the V12 ??

I'd be fine with the new 350. Its over 300bhp. When you have a gentry car speed is less of an issue...:D

Which brings me back on to the topic, the R230 like TV's and Alfies is much nicer. Its Elegant, and they sold plenty too, for a reason, style sells. Merc do a small agressive sporty job, the SLK. The SL is a GT and should have a timeless look. 7 years on and it looks fresh, in 7 years time the facelift won't look fresh.

I don't know why the cou;dn't have just kept the styling and brought over the newer engines etc.

Car manufacturers are only interested in people buying their cars new. If they could build their cars to last 3 years and make the used car market non-existent, they would.

It's all about the WOW factor these days, and being 'in'. Especially if you spend £100k on a car. 20 years ago, in the absence of easy credit, people who can afford to buy such cars were less impulsive. Today, youngish city slickers are their main target audience. As such, the more audacious the better.

You want to be heard arriving before they even see you and all that.

Its nice, and can see that on certain cars white really works. IMO the CLK isn't one of them, and neither is the SL.

The M3 does look cracking in white, and with black rims would be quite special.

As for your comments re finance and young city slickers, that holds an awful lot of truth.
