Hi Guys

I have had the sump changed on the car due to a crack and oil leak.

Changed oil for Motul 8100 Extra Clean - MB Spec 229.54

Now the sump has been changed driving along the Engine light came on, no symptoms prior to the light coming on.

I travelled about 20 miles at 80MPH before the light came on whilst stationary and idling.

Any Ideas Guys??....sorry I do not have more to go on

Thanks for looking at my posting and any help would very much be appreciated

Kind Regards

Nick

We presume you mean the Engine Management Light ??
Can't do much except have the code(s) read to see what the problem is...
Oil level okay??

It's probable the EML coming on is unrelated to your oil change. You have used an oil that exceeded the spec the MB require so no worries on that score.
You should have a message in the cluster if the level is low, so as above, the car really needs to go to a Mercedes specialist to read the stored fault code to see what is ging on.

Brilliant

Thank you so much for replying guys its very much appreciated, yes it was a tall order really wasn't it without the DTCs to give a pointer as to what is going on, I will keep you guys posted as to what it is, I will say however prior to the cars engine management light coming on it was really flying, in fact its the fastest its been since I have owned her, which is 6 months, I couldn't believe how quick she was going......then bang the engine light???.......Like I say I will keep you posted

BR to all who read this thread

Any disturbance to the engine oil passageways/sump should always be checked for any potential new leaks. HAVE YOU CHECKED THE LATEST ENGINE OIL LEVEL WITH A DIPSTICK SINCE THE LIGHT CAME ON?

Went back to the specialist this morning who fitted the sump for me, how true this is I dont know?....apparently there was oil seepage in the O2 sensor wiring loom? this could be true, a few months ago when the timing chain sprockets sheared there was oil everywhere into things like manifold etc.....due to capillary attraction the oil has made its way along the loom affecting the function of the sensor im told???

Am I right? I tend to leave about 5mm space from the max mark of the dipstick to allow for oil expansion??

Thanks again for reading guys

Nick

Oil contamination of the engine wiring loom-usually from the camshaft adjuster/s is a known fault on these engines. Usually tracks back to the engine ECU but could migrate anywhere. There was a modified part of the engine loom made available to combat this iirc. Its always a good idea to see a distinct gap below the full dipstick level when the engine oil is cold to allow for expansion- I would aim for something like "3/4 full" on the dipstick scale when cold

Hi Graeme

Speaking with the Tech this morning he has mentioned about the modified part you refer to on the loom, he assures me that my car has this part fitted, now that said I think it shows how bad the oil contamination was when the timing chain sprocket sheared, the oil was literally everywhere, im really thankful I didn't bend any valves.

Regarding the dipstick I will keep her at 3/4 full

Thank you Graeme for your information and excellent advice.
