I need a bit of help with a part number, spring has sprung:mad: . Once again I am faced with the used car dilemma, I can see the colour code but no way of knowing whether this is correct for the vehicle( 2009 CLK 220cdi Avantgarde). I have tried the online webcat but I am unsure of which part number is correct.

Contact the main dealer with your VIN , it is the only place you will get the correct springs for your particular vehicle.

When i replaced mine on the CLS the MD weren`t too expensive for the springs.

Ok, thanks, only problem is that the nearest dealership is 50 miles away

I gave up on genuine MB springs after several broke on me. Fittted Eibach all round with Bilstein shockers and had no problems so far.

I would go down that route except I would need the part numbers for the genuine springs to cross reference.

Ring MB Newcastle with your VIN , they have an eBay on line shop and will organise correct spring and put it on site online so you can purchase it. They will then send it to you.
I bought discs and pads for an unusual model A class this way, price was also very competitive

I contacted him through eBay and gave them my vin, they replied asking me what colour code was on the existing spring. This put me off a little bit as I would have preferred them to use my vin to get the factory spec right. After all , as I explained to them, I have no guarantee that what is currently on the vehicle is correct. At least if I had a part number I could source my own supplier whether that was genuine Mercedes ( not sure if that’s the way to go after hearing reliability issues on their springs) or aftermarket from a reputable manufacturer

Just go to Eibach shop and put your reg number in and see what they come up with. I think Avantgarde is the same as sport set up.

I’ve tried many websites with the reg and they list both the standard suspension and the sport suspension for my car. However I will try it on the Eibach site and see what happens, thanks

The AUTODOC site has spring colours mentioned , which might help your research .

It says “Colour marking see PDF”, I don’t see the referred to PDF. I have contacted them for clarification and if I hear back I’ll put the reply up here.
I’m starting to miss my landrover discovery2. So much simpler for parts but hey ho.

Can't you put your VIN into a decoder and confirm what type of suspension you have?

Based on that you can choose the appropriate parts.

I have already a printout from a vin decoder, no real help I’m afraid. I also searched on a webcat I got on this forum when I joined up, I have attached a screenshot of the result and it can be seen there are a few variations on front springs denoted by colour codes. As far as I can see from what is currently on the vehicle mine has three red dots but how do I know if these have been fitted in the past by mistake?

The colour coding is specific to the options fitted to the vehicle , more (heavy) options the spring will have a different rate to a poverty spec (lighter) vehicle.

If the car is sitting level (front to back) it may be a fair assumption it has the correct springs for the vehicle.

Two options , either replace them all with an aftermarket set or just the front two from the dealers. FWIW i would just replace the lot as it would be the most cost effective solution in the long run , especially on a 20+ year old car.

That’s probably good advice, not much I can do until Monday so hopefully I’ll come to a decision by then. Thanks

I have a pair of sport rear springs and complete front struts for sale. They are all very low mileage 2000 miles max and in good condition.

I think that might prove expensive shipping to Northern Ireland.

The 3 red spray dots don't look like proper spring markings to me. If you are after the correct part for your particular car only the dealer can provide this using your vin. As any optional extras on your car are taken into account. I got lucky recently, when a very helpful chap provided me with a printout and calculated which colours I needed for my car. Failing that if your ride height is correct you can measure the actual thickness of the spring and using your reg check Autodoc in the eibach spring section.
I don't think there's that many springs listed for yours.

At this stage my head hurts. I think I’ll try to ring the dealers tomorrow although I doubt if they’ll give me a part number without ordering from them. Thanks for all the replies
