I don't want to come across as pedantic but pulling a vacuum & leaving it for a set amount of time is basically what the guys at Quickfit do when they plug their machine in & walk away letting it do it's stuff. The proper way to check for leaks is to pressurise with nitrogen to at least the standing charge pressure (80 psi +). Pulling a vacuum is only the equivalent of -15 psi. A decent aircon specialist will always pressurise with nitrogen to check for leaks. If it's easy to get to and has not ben done replace the cabin/pollen filter(s) before you take it to an A/C specialist. For info: the guy who does the A/C on my cars last time drew a vacuum for a full 45 minutes before closing the system then watched it hold vac for at least another 20 mins before even starting the rest of the job. Maybe overkill , but a sign of someone taking care to do it correctly.
Dramatic ? Yes it can be horribly dramatic ££££ if the evaporator has a leak (rare) but the only way to find out is to get it serviced by someone who knows what they are doing , not just someone who will top it up.
Let us know how it goes.
