My car has developed a very unhealthy noise a few days ago. I have stopped driving it. I need to know how to get it diagnosed and to whom it should be taken.

Video/Audio: https://youtu.be/Tlb2OoCpZ9c

SYMPTOMS:

1. When you start the car, from inside the car you can hear an erratic metallic rattling noise.
2. The noise is very loud in when in Park or Neutral.
3. The noise mostly appears to subside when in any gear (Drive, Reverse, D1, D2, D3, D4).
4. There is more metallic sound audible from under the bonnet.
5. The sound appears to get smoother when revs increase to 1500 (while in Park). This may be partly because the regular noise of the engine overpowers the clinkity clank noise but also for sure the noise does not increase with revving the engine more.
6. Using a mechanics stethoscope, it does not pick up much vibration from the top of the engine but a bit more at the rear of the engine.

HISTORY:

Car has 130K on the clock.
It had a Transmission Rebuild done a couple of months ago.
There is also a Timing Chain related recall overdue on it.
I have only had it since a couple of months but engine oil level has been fine.

DIAGNOSES:

1. I have Carly for MB app and the car is clean pulling no error codes.
2. There is no engine warning lamp in the dash.
3. I have been told it could be Injectors, Engine, Flywheel, Transmission.

HELP:

What is it likely to be?
What is it likely not to be?
Who do I get it look at it?

I am based in Southall, West London.

Look at the belt tensioner see if its jumping up and down

So, I have had a separate issue with noise coming when I turn the steering wheel. To remedy this, after advise from various mechanics / garages, I:
1. Had the power steering system flushed twice.
2. Changed the steering pump.
3. Changed tensioner pulley plus another small pulley.
4. Changed the water pump.

None of these resolved the steering noise, but this seeminly unrelated noise has developed in the mean time.

Now another mechanic has diagnosed the steering noise problem to be alternator pulley. He tried to remove it to replace it but both the specialist bits broke so he went and purchased another Alternator removal kit and again both the needed bits broke. He then said that the only way to get the pulley changed is to get a new alternator. So the vibration in the drive belt and steering noise will hopefully go after that.

This thread, is for the noise as per the clip. This new noise does not appear to be coming from the front pulleys but more from the rear of the engine bay. The noise subsides (mostly) when in gear. Also the noise smooths out a little when the engine RPM reaches 1500 while still parked.

Also, just wanted to mention, the car starts first time and does not smoke.

First thing i would do is run the engine briefly without the poly V belt- If the noise disappears then the problem is related to one of the ancilliaries driven by said belt. Other wise its probably timing gear related.

Thanks for your swift feedback. I will get it started with the drive belt off on Thu and will feedback. I'm 95% sure thesis new noise is unrelated to the pulleys etc driven by the drive belt.

With the timing chain being the next in line likely cause, how do we explain that the noise largely subsides when in Drive or Reverse?

TC maybe x2 ................... or one of the bearings on the output shaft - sounds like soon as a gear set is selected that locks the output shaft to that gear set the noise stops because the bearing is stationary:crazy:

That sounds very much like a busted flex plate. or the fixing bolts coming adrift and colliding with the back of the engine.
Do not run that engine like a that until you have pinpointed the area of noise emission.,

I would focus first on the past transmission repair and the bell housing area for starters.
