2012 W204 - No clock unless ignition is on?!

Just noticed this the other day; the car cannot tell you the time unless you put the ignition on, is that right?

Sure, you can switch on the audio without the key in but unless you put it in and turn it to the Acc position it actively refuses to show the time on the main display.

Even a 1978 Escort GL could display the time without having the key in!

Is this a C-Class peculiarity or are all modern Mercedes the same? Or am I simply doing something wrong?

The clock comes on in my 2012 W204 as soon as you open the door!

But what I still haven't worked out is why the outside temperature goes off as soon as you turn on the ignition.

If you are in the car the ignition is on. Dont see the problem - or do you actually live in the car and have lost your wrist watch / phone / tablet etc ?

No, the clock in the central display with the speedo. Nothing comes on in the big display (Comand) without first turning on the ignition. I can't even turn on the audio without the ignition on, but once it's going you can turn the ignition off again, but then the audio turns off after a few minutes.

Ahh, maybe I'm just being a plum then.

When I drop my son off at school we often sit and chat for 5-10 minutes before he gets out of the car. I've found in this scenario I've not been able to see a clock and I'm sure I would've looked straight ahead, but I am getting on a bit, so...!

Maybe the circular display times out after a few minutes, leaving me with no clock, could that be it?

When I had my w204 I could switch the radio on without the key. I used to do this when I cleaned the car.

Maybe this is a side effect of having Comand. I can switch the audio on by pressing the centre console control in.
