CLA180 Soon
Hi all,
looking at either a C-class coupe or a CLA180/200 C117, in 1.6/2L form, around the 2013-14 mark, as there seems to be a fair amount about for what seems like a good price?

Forgive me, I'm new to Mercs, how reliable is the engine? I see many on high miles, but no mention of timing chain, and I have VERY bad luck! Is it a very expensive job to have an independent replace for piece of mind?

Are they all cheap because people know the engine is a grenade? Or is it very rare?

I'm used to seeing any chain always fail due to plastic guides or the tensioners, so it scares me quite a bit, as I'm used to old BMW's where the chain would outlive the earth, such as the M50/52 engines...

In general is there anything else I need to worry about with a CLA, electrics wise/body wise/corrosion?

Do these have electric waterpumps and does everything require diagnostics to do, for example any BMW from E60/E90 platform era onwards requires BMW software to even bleed the ABS/brakes properly, along with needing a power supply attached so you don't kill the many modules, all of which require coding in, I'm used to doing things myself, but don't fancy spending a grand or more making or buying a power supply and having to do everything with a laptop - However, IF needed I'm happy to do it myself with a laptop, as I'm pretty used to this with BMW software and what it entales...

These CLA/C Class coupe/saloons seem to be going for a very good price for their age, and I was hoping if I got something like a 13/14 plate (which is within my budget) that I would only have to do the common stuff like droplinks/ball joints/tie rods/bushes/arms etc etc, normal age related stuff...

How much of a nightmare is this thermostat I see people mentioning? Or is that a different engine?

Which engine does this car actually have? Wikipedia states a M 270 DE 16 AL or 20 AL? Is that correct? Whenever I look I find people mentioning a 274? Did they have both or is the 274 the 2nd generation or newer version?

Forgive me for asking so many questions, I just want to learn. Any input you guys can give, would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
