    2013 BLS Class

Here are the first spy shots available of the upcoming 2013 Mercedes Benz BLS - an entirely new 4-door coupe model.

The BLS will be a small, 4-door coupe, a baby CLS, but one that is front-wheel drive and based on the MFA platform shared with the upcoming next-generation A-Class and B-Class models.

The prototype we see here is dressed in a heavy camo but we can make out the basic contours of this compact sedan/coupe.

As this is basically a B-Class, engine options will be shared with that sister model and include a 2.0 liter with 203 PS (149 kW / 200 bhp) and a 2.2 liter diesel with 172 PS (127 kW / 170 bhp).

Somehow it is difficult to imagine that will be any better looking even with the disguise removed. A niche too far?

Why is the front wheel so much larger than the back?

I was wondering the same myself.

Maybe during the vehicle's development they try many wheel/tyre size combinations for ride and handling characteristics and this is just one test matrix, though I suspect not a final setup?

I agree. Struggling to see the point unless its a; cheaper, and b; helps with their overall Co2 corporate emissions...

Someone at MB is going to get into trouble for allowing that to be leaked!

My guess on the wheel size thing is that it will be to do with a gearing/transmission/final drive issue.

Maybe they are using an existing FWD gearbox/final drive/engine in the test vehicle which has the wrong ratios for the new car and until the right transmission/powerplant is available compensate with larger wheel??

One must remember that there are plenty of markets that like cars we don't. e.g. in USA they love the Jetta - over here it is an abject failure. They like smaller sedans we prefer our smaller cars to be hatchbacks. Then there is the Far East market. Not sure what they prefer though. I think Peugeot and Renaults are well liked in China so they have no taste at all...:D:D

I have just read that this model may be available as a hybrid - which may have something to do with it?

Looks quite nice though, for folk who find the CLS a bit too long.

They're testing for understeer. All FWD cars tend to understeer. You can reduce this tendency by fitting larger wheels with a wider track at the front. Audi in fact has done this with the production version of its RS3 Sportback. I imagine that MB is trying to work out the optimum tyre combinations for each model depending on output, weight and other variables. I doubt, however, that the production version of this car will have larger front wheels; if it does, then the difference will be much less than in this picture.

it may be that the BLS gets AWD.
