2014 220 E AMG Line - LED High Beam

Hi - I have an E Class AMG Line with Part LED headlamps - I want to replace the full beam (Halogen) with LED as they look poor and perform poorly compared with the LED main beam - any thoughts / pointers ??

I am considering this kit H7 HIGH BEAM CREE LED TURBO SUPER BRIGHT 7200 LM XML CHIP HEADLIGHTS C | eBay

I would be wary of third party headlights, they are often not as good from a safety perspective.

You can work with COMAND to see if they can retrofit the new headlights / Intelligent Light System on your car.
 
Agreed, don't mess up your 14 plate E Class with something cheap from eBay that apparently fits pretty much every car ever made.

Speak to the experts in retrofitting optional extras to Mercs.
 
I also have a 2014 E class 350 and am of the same opinion about the original lights and feel the main beam lets down the rest of the package. I did post on here earlier in the year about whether it was possible to upgrade the main beam but nobody came up with any ideas. I have fitted some brighter H7 halogen bulbs which are a bit better but still not up to the performance of the dipped beam.
I cannot understand why the earlier posters are questioning the LED H7 bulbs you are proposing, you are not suggesting fitting aftermarket headlamps, just replacing the main beam bulbs. What is the difference between this and fitting brighter H7 bulbs or even doing a HID conversion, which I am personally not keen to do as everything does not fit within the original housing and I think they burn hotter than the original bulbs.
I am certainly interested in these LED bulbs and provided that the supplier can confirm everything fits within the existing housing I think I am going to fit some.

I think it's because they are relatively new

Plus it doesn't say on that advert what K it is, them stating it is 'white' simply isn't enough, I'd have a good guess that it's above 5000k which would probably be illegal. If it's 4300k which is technically the OEM 'white' then happy days

Resistors would be needed (if not built in) to avoid error messages

Try Nightbreaker unlimited +'s in there instead they are brilliant

Car that new I wouldn't touch a thing! Only halogen
 
Just looked at the ad again, seems it says no error messages.

It won't 'fit' inside your housing though, that would stick out past the dust caps leaving your headlamp units open surely? And if that's the case, would the connector wires stretch out that far to plug into them?
 
Remember that you should legally inform your insurance company of any modifications and that the heat sinks on LEDs do get HOT.

The reflector (or headlight bowl) is designed for a particular lamp source, is the lamp source size, position, and photo metric output. Change any of these factors and you will alter the beam spread.

it's an error to judge a beam pattern solely by its cutoff (which is all an MOT checks for) In many lamps, especially the projector types, the cutoff will remain the same regardless of what light source is behind it. Halogen bulb, HID capsule, cigarette lighter, firefly, hold it up to the sun—whatever. That's because of the way a projector lamp works. The cutoff is simply the projected image of a piece of metal running side-to-side behind the lens. Where the optics come in is in distributing the light under the cutoff. And, as with all other automotive lamps (and, in fact, all optical instruments), the optics are calculated based not just on where the light source is within the lamp (focal length) but also the specific photometric characteristics of the light source...which parts of it are brighter, which parts of it are darker, where the boundaries of the light source are, whether the boundaries are sharp or fuzzy, the shape of the light source, and so forth.


And to be honest These company's are so stupid as to offer these without doing proper investigation (polar curve and photometric tests........or a simple MOT) They even state on the website "very effective at moving traffic on the nurbergring"......... Well the reason for that is that you are glaring all the drivers in front, in their rear view mirrors, blinding them,so they would rather pull over than crash because of their stupid headlight conversion.

They do fit inside the unit with the original dust caps in place - I had a brief look but its never stopped raining so will fit on the next decent day - it will be fiddly as its quite tight to get them it but plenty of space / ventilation once fitted - As they are only for high beam which isnt tested on MOT nor would you keep it on when either following someone or someone is approaching you I'm not too worried if the they produce glare - more about performance - Will update once fitted
 
If..........they are genuine CREE Leds then they will produce a lot of heat through the heatsink (I doubt the heatsink has been properly designed anyway), you could be lining yourself up for a heap of trouble..........thermal event wise.

Good luck with that insurance claim.

Hmmm maybe - but I've run them on a test bed for 15 mins - very bright pure white light much brighter than a halogen - The heatsink was warm not hot - and how long does any one keep full beam on for ?? certainly not like main beam. I will retest again for 30 mins this time and see.
 
Not wishing to tell you to suck eggs, but I assume your test bed has the same restricted airflow/confines and temperature as the inside of the headlamp when the dips been on for a while as well?

Hey it'll probably be fine..........but it is a 2014 motor and if the worst does happen you can say goodbye to any payout, are the main H7s really that bad?
 
Its not for the mains as per my post - its full beam = it has the LED main beam - It was running in an old escort head lamp - Im dealing reality not dreams - neither do I want my hard earned turning into a total loss !!

Full/main is the same thing, it's your dipped beam that's LED

You're honestly playing with fire there (excuse the pun) they look/seem safe but I'm paranoid as to the fact that they just haven't been properly reviewed or tested yet :/
 
Are people forgetting how hot halogens run? and this high beam bulb runs for 15 mins in an escort headlight with no issues, who uses their high beam for 15 mins solid??

My c220 2015 with high performance led lights runs a led light for high and low beam, low are housed within projectors, and high is an led sat within a reflector style light. I really see no great issues with this bulb and would give it a go were I in same position after these tests etc, for comparison, run a halogen bulb for same duration and record both temps achieved.

And to note, there will be no issues of blinding oncoming traffic etc as mentioned above as it is high beam use only. Who wouldnt flash if anyone was approaching them with high beam on? regardless of halogen, hid or led.

But the Halogen bulb's heat point is within the reflector bowl where it is designed to get hot, this LED "bulb" has it's heat point at the rear where the heat sink/cooling fins are, out in the enclosed PLASTIC/ABS portion of the lamp assembly along with associated wires and cabling.

But those are the dip beams, correct?

And designed to cope with the thermal emissions from those bulbs.

dipped and main are both led, not my car, re read thread them comment champ [emoji106]
