So???

What 2016 parts was needed SO FAR to do this retrofit from NTG4 to 5s1:

1. Comand 5s1 big version with built in HD navi
2. Screen
3. Video cable to screen
4. Repinning of cables in sockets
5. LAN antenna
6. H/K Amp
7. Camera and cablekit
8. Screen frame
9. New joystick with 4 buttons
10. Pincode
11. Maps with activation code

I am experimenting alot with programming and activating of menues. I got the AMG logo to start it of. And alot else so far.

So ALL that works now but

only PROBLEMS so far:

Navigation dont get a speed signal. So maps stop moving when it loses satelites.
Media dont showup in cluster. All else show up and work. Radio,Navi.phone...
AMG dails, then middle big one dont work. Guess it is also speed signal issue.
Camera dont send video

Back....

So far when it comes to the speed signal all I can think of is the that it lacks the speed signal in the can bus and how to get it there I dont know right now..Working like hell to figure it out. All sugestions are welcome.

Also the Camera wont work. It activates but just says camera not avalible even though it is there and it is powered up and can be programmed. I wonder if it has to do with the PDC that suddenly can be seen by star diagnose after installing a new front sam. Guess it goes into a different place on the SAM....

A bit surprised there seems to be no intrest in this retrofit here.. ;)

I'm interested in it, just don't understand modern electronics and stuff, so usually keep quiet on threads like this. I was brought up with the knowledge that if it's tied up with string it's temporary, tied up with wire it's permanent. :)

All I can say is good luck with it, and I hope you get it sorted out and fully functional. :thumb:

It's impressive to see what you've managed to do!
I'm surprised to see just how much you got working.

You must have good contacts, can't see too many Command 5's being on the used market..

No not many at all. Bought it localy from a used parts seller that didnt know much about what he sold. I paid like 300 sterling. Single DVD player.

Great job!! I hope you solve the issues with speed signal and camera...

as for me... I am still trying to figure out how to get the "video out" signal from NTG4.5 to send the comand screen to a couple of rear seats lcd's, I am starting to think it's not possible at all :( There are some box interfaces out there for video out, but all for older NTG's...

Camera needs to be connected to the correct CANbus distributor.
Various control modules need to be SCN coded when adding a camera to an NTG5 system/car.

How did you generate map pin code? Mercedes dealers cant do this for cars that havnt had NTG5 properly installed into a car that is valid for NTG5.

Camera is coneted to the LIN bus and it activates in comand but just says camera not avalible. When I disconect the LIN nothing happens in comand. So it clearly is working. I can see it and code it with xentry and vediamo. It is coded and configured. The w212/w207 camera has the the control module built into the camera it self.

I have my own source that generates these codes for me. No problem at all.

Just bought a 2011 (pre-facelift) W212 with NTG4 (not even collected it yet, my first Mercedes), so I could be very interested in this. Just to be clear - the camera you are referring to is the reversing camera, right?

Mine already has a reversing camera, but would this be a new camera for 5S1?
Also you installed a H/K amp, but used the existing speakers - are they not different (better quality) for the HK system?

(Then) I read this http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/electronics/117378-how-upgrade-e-class-w212-sound-system.html which says the speakers are welded in ( no shake, rattle and roll I guess). So if the HK amp is doing anything it's just adding some surround-sound-iness?

YES.

YES. Or a converter that I now have made.

No. Same as before. Just a diferent language between the units.

No clue. There are more speakers as well.

SOLUTION to speed signal problem:

In my car I have a new SAM with integraded CGW for making the facelift headlights work 100% that I installed. THAT was the damn simple problem. New cgw dont speak to old EPS.

Proof? A install like mine where done in a W212 from 2009 with original SAM and all worked in that one.

SO IF YOU have all old units still in car ALL will work on any car model..W218,W212 and W207. Even in W204. But not sure on the physical fit is in W2034.

OK, thanks.

Regarding the HK unit, from what I read it provides surround sound decoding to enable "Playback of DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and CD in the digital standards MLP 5.1, DTS®5.1, Dolby®Digital 5.1, PCM and MP3". i.e. goes beyond plain stereo MP3 or WAV files of the basic unit.

I have just got into hd audio formats like FLAC files with 24 bit, 48/96/182 kHz sampling and DTS audio files with a purchase of a Fiio X3 mkII portable player. A cheaper option in a car would be to put together a Raspberry Pi Zero and a Pi DAC and a wifi dongle (total about 25 quid with a case) running (free) software like Moode, Volumio or RuneAudio. Then just feed from the DAC into the car stereo with a 3.5mm jack. Control of tracks/playback would be via a smartphone or tablet and wifi to the server running on the Pi.

I think I'll wait to see how good/bad the NTG4, particularly the satnav, is (though I use Waze on a smartphone for daily drive with traffic info) before making a decision about needing to upgrade.
