2017 E class 220d AMG Line Premium Plus. Obsidian
I bought a new E class before christmas. It was well specced. I thought I would let you know things I found out after delivery.

1) you need to be speeding in the UK to use 9th gear.

2) you will get just over half of the quoted 62.8mpg figures.Mine has now done over 2000 miles avg 36mpg over 600miles. I hope it will get a lot better after 10000miles.

3) if you spec a car with command online. It IS'NT until you purchase a data plan from Vodafone.

5) you cannot create a wifi hotspot in the car via the command online system unless you have the data plan.

6) the internet is really slow using vodafone internet in the car service.

7 If you get the non command system you can use your own phone for data.

8) In the UK and EU you only get a 3G UTMS system in the command online. In China and the USA you get 4G LTE module.

I have spoken to to the dealer and MB customer services they both say everything you want to here and do nothing.:wallbash:

Pete

What is it you want MB to do for you?

Always good to hear new car owner experiences, thanks. I had a test drive in a E220d and it was hugely impressive even with a "small" engine.

Sorry It should have said Mercedes customer service rather than MB customer services

Do you think it's wise ,whilst driving in 9th gear, to try and access the internet . It's a car , why not just drive it.:D

Does it impress the women though?

Have not tried it. But if the self driving is as slow as the internet it might be a bit dangerous:D

Good to share your experience, at least I am aware of the dangers.

OK let's debunk some 'fake news' (apparently this is the in-phrase at the moment)

I have had a S213 (E220d Estate AMG Line) since the beginning of November. It has now 9k miles.

1) "you need to be speeding in the UK to use 9th gear"

No you don't. The car will switch happily in to 9th gear, depending on your driving style and chosen driving mode.

2) "you will get just over half of the quoted 62.8mpg figures."

I drive in a reasonably spirited manner, alternating between auto and semi manual, and using the various drive modes. I average 45mpg. I don't hang around. This is borne out by my colleagues. No one has a avg mpg that low.

3) " if you spec a car with command online. It IS'NT until you purchase a data plan from Vodafone."

Yes it is. You have a range on online services (including Live Traffic, Connect Me etc) that do not rely on the purchase of a separate data plan. You can buy a data plan from Vodafone that gives you 'Internet In The Car'. If you have a good data plan with your 4G mobile then use this instead.

5) no number 4 - you missed it out. "you cannot create a wifi hotspot in the car via the command online system unless you have the data plan."

Yes you can. You can create one using your 4G enabled mobile phone. I do this.

6) "the internet is really slow using vodafone internet in the car service."

Agree. Vodafone is not a great network.

7) "If you get the non command system you can use your own phone for data."

Sure you can. You can with the COMAND Online version too! Good eh?

8)"In the UK and EU you only get a 3G UTMS system in the command online. In China and the USA you get 4G LTE module."

This is depended on the SIM fitted, not any module. The current 'contract' is with Vodafone and the SIM cards are 3G at the moment.

Happy to share my experiences with you further Pete if it would make you any happier with your car.

I have tried mine wont go into 9th at 70mph whether it in eco, comfort or sport

I do regular 30 mile trips. have tried different speeds and I can only get your sort of mpg at 60ish mph. I am getting similar mpg on a run as I did with the Audi sq5 that ive just got rid of.

They should tell you this before you buy the car. I normally get in our cars and everything being created as I get in. Does any one know why they have gone this way.

5) no number 4 - you missed it out. "you cannot create a wifi hotspot in the car via the command online system unless you have the data plan."
Even our 2012 Skoda Superb could do it.

Yes you can. You can create one using your 4G enabled mobile phone. I do this.

The 2 Sims are virtual not actual. So to get 4G sims you need a different module all together.

Lot of comm issues and software updates etc are affected by this. Can we anyway force Merc UK to upgrade sims from 3G to 4G..???

Stop complaining about an excellent car that has just won Car of the Year 2017. Go buy a Tranbant and see if you like that. Vodafone plan is rubbish/expensive and is only of use for passengers who want to use your data plan

I spend most of my time on the motorway and I'm disappointed if it gets as low as 52mpg according to the trip computer. I usually get 57/58 but can get 60/61mpg at constant 70mph.
I have had a few ongoing emails with MB uk about the Internet speed. Vodafone's website advertises 4G but it's Mercedes that has only fitted 3G hardware. They said they took the decision because 4G isn't available everywhere and they thought the customer would be disappointed if it switched between 3G and 4G so they decided to make it 3G all of the time and they think I'm not disappointed now!
I've never heard such a stupid excuse in my life.
The good news is they are putting it in the next facelift so all I have to do is buy another new car.
They won't upgrade current cars because they would have to rip too much out to get to the module. So a state of the art car with third world electronics.

Note about above comment. Mine is a saloon. Is the gearing different?

What are you downloading/uploading which requires more than 3G?

.

Please don't blame the car, your foot is too heavy. I have the same car.

I did a return trip from Durham to Brand Hatch in Kent a week or so ago, the average mpg was 58mpg.

I wasn't trying, just driving, in-fact my return trip took me less than 4 hours with two very short stops to jump out and pick up drinks.

While I was in Kent for the weekend I ran around the locality to eat at restaurants etc on an evening. At all time the car was at least 2 up, plus a boot full of crap including 40 litres of race fuel.

On the evenings 5 up plus a boot full of crap.

I wont quote speeds but work it out yourself I wasn't hanging about.

My average mpg over six weeks is running at 48mpg and my usual driving habit is very short trips 2 miles or less at least 4 or 6 times a day, with an odd 20/30 mile trip thrown in for good luck.

Don't blame the tool...... you can take that either way:D

Just to explain my wifi whinge

The 213 gets its map updates via the internet now, it will download them to the car automatically. You don't have to go to the dealer to get it done. Obviously it only does it when the ignition is on. The problem is that even though I am in the car for several hours it still takes days to download. I have given up now. I download it to a stick and upload through the usb and it's almost instant.

So there are other ways around the problem. If I had known it would be 3G I would have just gone straight for the alternative and saved my £100.
Mercedes blames me for being dumb enough to believe the contract when it says 4G but I would expect that since they are in partnership with Vodafone they might actually talk to each other.

Finding a real woman who is impressed by your car is a rare thing...finding one that is impressed by a E class diesel estate would be a VERY rare thing. :-)

Never underestimate the pulling power of a e-class diesel estate!!
