On my 2019 E220D estate.
When changing rear pads and trying to push cylinder back into Caliper.
Do you.
Screw it back in.
Lever it back il.
Or
Get it back in via controls on dash.

Could not get it in when I was trying to fit new pads.

In my experience, GENERALLY, if it's electric handbrake on the calliper then push back in, if it's cable handbrake or electric/cable then wind back in.

Got job done today.
The rear brake cylinder requires to be screwed in a bit then pressed in. Repeat this a few times till it’s flush with caliper.
Yippee.

If it's electric handbrake you use the steering wheel service menu to automatically wind them back for you , after the process ,you may have to squeeze it back a tiny bit to get the caliper past the new pads.

Manual handbrake requires the piston to be pushed back all the way in.
