Hi, I am a new member and find the forums very usefull...Reading about the gearbox oil change I decided to have mine changed, the garage who I have used for many years agreed at 62000 miles it should be done and obtained the genuine Merc parts. They have done quite a few of these vehicles but I recieved a phone call later in the day to say 3 of the sump bolts would not budge:mad: however they tried.Did I want them to carry on and perhaps break the bolts??...I decided no,so if these bolts do ring off are they easily renewed without doing more damage? The garage say it will not be a problem but will not go ahead without my permission.Incidentally the local two Merc dealers say this oil change is not needed but should I require the cost will be £170+vat not bad the other one £280+vat?

There are newer idea's now and that is done by freezing, its an alternative shock treatment. Have you asked them if they have tried this

You could just change the oil and forget about the filter. Cost depends on the type/amount of transmission fluid used since the MB stuff is not cheap. Its true that the newer synthetic auto transmission fluids should last longer than the older type but to a certain extent it will depend on how the car has been used. Long motorway miles with infrequent gear changes are going to be less of a strain than running around in town with lots of acceleration and changing down etc. If you have synthetic fluid in your gearbox and its looking nice and clear I would be inclined to listen to MB and save your money for another 20-30K miles. There are several horror stories on the forum of sheared gearbox bolts requiring to be drilled out and one where part of the gearbox casing broke while trying to extract a broken bolt! You have been warned.;)

Han mine done on my 1999 W202 last year and a bolt was stuck, but the guy that did it is a Mercedes Autogearbox specialist and he simply applied some heat and removed it with no excitement whatsoever.
