w203
Hey guys and girls? I have a w203 shape coupe (55) do I need a bulb holder to put some hids in? Or should I stop being lazy and look in the light :D

On some cars you need a special bulb holder for HID. Like a metal clip. Some cars don't need them, a few of my old cars have needed a specialist bulb holder to hold the bulb in place and not bounce around.

It doesn't, I'm going to retro fit. As long as they are aligned properly they will not dazzle other road users.

You will need washers and self levelling too. And...they absolutely WILL dazzle...it's not about alignment but the design of the reflectors and the fact you do not have clear lenses...need I go on?

Thats very odd, as I've retro fitted probably over 30 cars and motorbikes with HID, not one has had headlight washers, self leveling and NONE have dazzled, all have had alignment set on MOT testers HL alignment equipment all HAVE passed subsequent MOT's and have also when pulled over for roadside inspections by VOSA/DVSA checking teams I've not been issued a notice or had headlights commented on.

Get them aligned correctly is all I will say

Have you had confirmation of the fact that you have never dazzled anyone? I bet not! So... you are one of the inconsiderate t*****s frequently blinding oncoming drivers but couldn't give a **** then.

Some very misinformed and delusional posts here

He doesn't need self levelling, washers or any sensors. His car will pass the MOT providing the alignment is correct and they do NOT dazzle

Reason why they'd pass without the items mentioned? Because the test requires that vehicles equipped with said items have to be working at time of test IF equipped. Seeing as a retrofitted car with HIDs doesn't have said items equipped, the car won't need them to pass the MOT. Sorry to burst bubbles

That said, I don't think the 203 has a projector based headlight or the correct housing so throwing in some HIDs willy nilly WILL dazzle people, and in my eyes is disrespectful to other road users and is as personally annoying to me as someone hogging the middle lane

Do everyone and yourself a favour and buy projectors and even a proper projector housing, not only will it not look absolute pony, it will drastically improve your driving sight when needed. Even the aftermarket complete projector headlights are better than slinging bulbs in

There must have been a W203 factory xenon option? These are probably the best headlamp units for your cause. You can upgrade the bulbs if needs be

And of course must be of an appropriate colour.

i.e. not too "blue".

Some cars with factory HID did not have washers - depends on how long you go back.

Yep, I believe it's something like 5000k and under being legal (4300k is OEM) anything higher than 5000k would be a fail however, I've seen some right dodgy ones pass

Personally. I hate HIDs with a passion as there is a tendency for the driver to think it is a "Barry boy" way to get xenon looking headlights when in fact when fitted to normal headlights you're just annoying other road users.

Don't be of those guys.

Personally I really don't give a flying F what people think about should I or should I not fit HID, I do what I like, if my car or bike fails an MOT due to them fitted then I'll consider changing my ways. There are far too many other major issues on the road to make wrong lights a big concern, too many stuck up idiot drivers who think they are in the right, know everything but couldn't pass their test if needed to retake it again, but still they think they are the next Lewis Hamilton in their own tiny brains

LOL, living up to your screen name I see, another happy pill I think :bannana: NEVER to my knowledge been flashed due to running with dipped beam, only when I forget to turn from main to dip have I been flashed and I deserved it then :)

I totally agree, always fit 4300k, higher rating turns blue but gives less light output on the tarmac.

Its a simple case of physics. With a reflector lens (normal headlight) the light doesn't get focused and scatters giving off a massive amount of glare. In a projector lens the lens is aspheric meaning the light is focused and doesn't p1ss off other road users.

BTW - I'm hardly stuck up, ust have a massive disliking for two types of road users. One with HIDS (no regard for others on the road) and tail gaters.

MBDLD, I have retro fitted the HIDS4U H7R kit which comes with an anti glare strip on the bulb. Highly recommended.

What a massive difference to visability and when adjusted properly has passed 2 MOT's.

I agree that some of the cheap bulbs from China do cause glare but these bulbs seem to work.

Mark.

HIDs are Xenons...just different ways of saying the same thing.

Wow, Some people think just because they have seen the mot guidelines that they are an MOT tester....

HID's are not illegal if set up properly and will pass mot's. It's the Barry boys that don't bother getting set up properly and go over 6k where the problem lies.

I have fitted plenty of kits to mine and other cars, never had a problem.

My question was not about the legality, it was about whether I needed a specialist holder. Which I do not.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

There is but at £190 a light, I'm not prepared to spend that kind of money. £50, yea... I have just restored the lights.
