208 clk 55 cab how do I know is it real ??

I am fairly sure that there was never an 'official' 208 CLK55 cabriolet listed on UK price lists etc. So it's quite possible that it comes up as a CLK430 cabriolet on MB's build spec - I believe that's how they were made - AMG did the conversions to order.

I reckon it'll be genuine, but you do need to check - as I know you are.

What's the history of the car? Can you speak to any of the previous owners?

You could try emailing/calling AMG in Germany with the VIN to verify - I suspect they'll be more useful than MB over here for a specialist enquiry like this

The C36`s sometimes came up as c280`s, as they were derived from the C280, maybe its the same sort of thing for the w208?, same era etc....

Oh - and as said already, none of the 208 '55s have signed engines, just the plastic 'AMG' vanity cover as shown on page 1.

BTW, I've only seen a couple of these for sale - both were about two years ago and one of them had very low mileage - something in the 20k region IIRC. I saw a 208 '55 cabriolet in Silver near Hampton Court back in November but other than that, I've never seen one on the road - rare cars!

thanks Will I didnt think of trying AMG direct Local MB dealer said it was built in Nov 2001 but it wasnt registered until march 2003 but shows on their system as a 430 convertible

V5 says 55 AMG with a different engine no

looking at the pictures of engine covers it is the same as a 55 not a 430..

Just dont get why ALL MB records dont say what I think it is ..what happened to german efficiency !

'Lost in translation' between AMG and MB, and from Germany to the UK I'd guess.

At least by speaking to AMG directly they can tell you from the VIN the real story, and what they have/have not done to the car
