Been offered a set of 20's for my CLK, 8.5" et38 front and 10" et38 rear, Says they were fitted to a SL without spacers and seeing as I have SL rims on already. They should fit ok right?

Thoughts...

Regardless of will they fit you will be restricting the range of tyres avialable, those that are will almost certainly be more expensive and you will undoubtedly make the ride much harsher.

Yeah not worried about that, THey will be for summer use only.

I hope your insurers are similarly unworried...

Don't do it.
The tyres are the limiting factor.
I tried fitting 20s to mine which had been on an SL, the tyres rubbed everywhere like mad. If I had shelled out big bucks for lower profile tyres then I might have had a chance.
I stuck with 19s and tyres were easily available for those. 235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear.

Look at prices on 235/30/20 front tyres and 275/25/20 or 285/25/20 rear tyres.

It depends if you want to look at the car or drive it, fiting those wheel / tyre combinations will have a real impact on ride, handling and overall drivability.
