A friend is having problems with his air-con and OTG see below can anyone advise?

"My E300 Turbodiesel is showing an outside temperature of 46ºC. I’m not sure, but I don’t think it is really just quite that warm outside at the minute, but you never know. Coincidently, the aircon has gone too. It simply just doesn’t work. Are the two events connected? Is it an easy fix? Is it likely that the gas has escaped or is this something that just breaks down after 150,000 miles. It is 158,000 at the moment."
