I have noticed a small crack develop in one of my buttons on the ignition key. I asked my dealer for a price for a new casing and i was told that casings cannot be bought separately - I need a whole new key at £227.

Does anybody know if it is possible to swap the innerds from one key to another (if I can source a good 2nd hand key from another car)?

And, what is the cheapest way to get a whole new working key for my car? Is there any other way that is cheaper than the dealer price of £227 (eg re-programme a key from another car)?

Hi,I have also been looking at keys and as far as I can make out there is a machine from china China Auto Diagnostic Tool Center -Top Quality, Good Service, Competitive Price
It can clone the chips in your key so producing a new but cloned i.r.key but not the metal element. Also I found a firm that I presumed used this techno. replacmentmercedeskey.co.uk but did not get a reply I will try again thanks for your time.

    Euge.

Do you not have 2 keys for the car?
Put the cracked one away as a spare and use the second one?

I bought a key on Ebay and swapped the innards. Open and remove the bits from the new key first so you know what you are doing. Then remove the bits from the old key and slide into the new one. Make sure you buy exactly the same key, you can't upgrade.

There is really no way except through the dealer, of getting a new key.
