My C 220 Cdi is requesting that I feed it some oil. I will phone the (nice) local dealership in the morning but does anyone have any views on what (oil) I should put in my lovely engine :)

Thanks

Your handbook should say, mine said Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Diesel oil which is what I bought as I assumed that was what the put in at the factory.

If you've had it service they should also have put the oil in the service book.

Be careful not to fill it up the MAX mark on the dipstick. Mid-way between the MIN & MAX will do. Once in the engine, the oil will expand and if you have topped the level right up, you will probably get a warning light telling you there's too much oil in.

Lightning Strike!

Had to smile (just a little!) - phoned the dealer this morning as my manual (I didn't think at the time) wasn't that clear. Only to find out that the phones had been taken out by a lightning strike yesterday!! Got routed to another branch but they weren't that helpful so I called in later as I was passing.

So the up shot is I've got some 10W-40 Castrol GTD Magnatec.

My Merc is only six months old so I'm a little surprised that it says at standstill add 1.5 litres and I got a malfunction warning yesterday saying add 1 litre at next filling station!! The manual does say that new engines will drink a bit of oil. Oh well just have to keep an eye on it. First A service due in 5900 miles (about 4 months away).

Thanks

Personally, I'd insist on using fully synthetic only in these engines, especially as they have such long oil change intervals with the FSS system. In the States, there have been problems with MB engines sludging up when non synth is used, and I personally know of one car that has needed an engine rebuild due to sludging (a 240 V6 petrol).

Oh, I thought it was semi synth. However, if it complies with 229.1, then it should be fine I guess, but I'd still be happier with fully synth if it was me.

Robbo - this does say that it's synthetic and that it complies with MB 229.1 (which is the MB spec????). That is certainly the number in the manual.

Is this OK?

Thanks

Errr.. it's what the dealers use but is it Ok? Hmm.

Magnatec is synthetically enhanced mineral oil and doesn't really rate as a proper semi synthetic, but it'l do....just.

So if Magnetec isn't quite up to the job - what should go in there?

The dealer said this is what they use and that it would be cheaper for me to purchase elsewhere!! - nice!

However if you have any views I'd be grateful - Dieselman.

Thanks

Fully synthetic seems to be whats most commonly recommended. I bought Halfords own (on special offer at present). The MB specialist that serviced my c220 cdi said it was fine and I saved about £30.00

the dealer used magnitec.

I use magnitec , i buy it at low cost in costco and get the dealer to use my own oil and save a fortune.

Oil is oil .. depends on how long youre going to keep the car. IF youre in it for the long run ., then fully synth.

If you intend to change it in a few years. .. why you helping the next guy ?

I was going to bed but I switched the pooter back on - I've been a bit dense I feel :) The ultimate answer to my question (as RichardM says way back at the start) is that MB recommend Mobil 1. I've even got a separate brouchure devoted to the subject in my manual pack!!! Also written on the side of the MP19 F1 car :D Yes I know major moment - I've had a tough day.

Take your point fuzzer re price. Have to find out the difference between the two. Ultimately we'll keep this car for another two and a half years. However we will replace it with something next that we may just keep for longer.

As you say in the short time we keep the car, it's only oil. I want to look after my baby so I may just.........

Thanks peeps.

yep mobil 1 but oil consumption is high within the first 10 k due to the oil scrappers beding in same problem on audi tdis oil should be at max expansion is accounted for problem is people fill to max and do not give time for oil to hit the sum thus 3 hrs later the drain oil comes on always do a manual check and if turbo diesel then keep up to max the bearings need it by the wat i always have a oil change at 10 k never longer read honest john in daily telegraph

Just out of interest, Brabus recommend Aral Supertronic 0w40 fully synthetic :)

do not just add oil with out doing a visual check the on board computer read out does go faulty in that the sensor can break down i presume you have a dipstick if not bye the tool if there is engine damage you can reply that checked weekly by the old fashion way ie dipstick.

Check anti-freeze!

My friend's C180 had a similar warning about adding oil. He finally succumbed and added a bit of oil.

On a separate and older thread, I posted about their car's two rear wheels going bald completely (only done 5000 miles). MB dealer told that their car was tighten too tightly by the transporter and the transmission is damaged. To cut the story short, he sent the car in for the part to be replaced. As the computer said, an A service was due, he had it done by them at the same time. MB called and showed his wife that they found oil in the anti-freeze section! To date, they haven't found the cause of the leak. They have sent a part to MB HQ for checking.

This might have no bearing on your C220 CDi. However, if I were you, I would check the anti-freeze just to make sure there is no leakage anywhere.
