229.4 - Triple QX 5w40 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil

A good question MLAM and one I'd like to hear the answer to. Must admit I hadn't thought about that previously. Just how long or how many miles does it provide the right protection for and does the approval rating cover such things?

I doubt you will do much damage but why would you take a risk with such an inexpensive commodity...petrol costs £100 a tank and lasts a week and you're considering saving £20 on something that will last a year.

Valid point, it's not so much saving money, what I wanted to know was would it be ok for even like lets say 3 months as a sacrificial oil to run it through to clean the engine so to speak.

There is no way I'd keep that in the engine for a year, I'd get the GM Dexos2 for that which is MB 229.51 approved.

just to let you no that I have been using this oil for two years in my e320cdi 210 model with no probs but on saying that being from the old school I change it at 6000 miles hope this is helpfull to you

I would be happy to use any decent quality oil and personally think the MB229.xx is just marketing bull. MBs aren't known for being sensistive about oil - they seem to survive well enough in Africa etc where the maintenance regime is unlikely to be very stringent.

I wasn't even aware there was an MB229.4 spec? There's 229.1, .3 and .5 with .31 and .51 being low ash.

Blowing up the image of the container gives MB 229.3 not MB 229.4:doh:

I'm pretty sure the oil I put in the link is the correct grade and viscosity for cdi engines? Perhaps someone could confirm?

One day you'll see the insides of an engine from a car that has had cheap oil and compare it to a car that has had quality oil. It's one thing that I would never scrimp on. If I was desperate to save money I'd buy cheap tyres but never cheap oil.

Mercs are not as tough as they used to be.

Correct it meets MB 229.51

It's a lot different from what the OP was asking about which appears to be MB229.3 oil This would be suitable for the car he enquired about- e220cdi without a DPF on a short service interval.

I said decent quality oil. It doesn't have to be top price.

Define "cheap tyres"? Again, you don't have to buy the dearest, but I certainly wouldn't fit very cheap tyres.

Triple QX is bottled in Turkey and has had some really bad test results in the UK. Euro Car Parts are just focused on selling cheap bits, cheap does not mean good, you don't drive the cheapest car so why use the cheapest oil?

Since many forum readers --"on a budget" might be tempted to use these QX oils from ECP it would be helpful if you could provide a link/s to these bad UK test results?

By having a poke around on google the general opinion is that its rebadged Shell oil (I have no idea if this is true BTW)

If TRIPLE QX 5W-30 SynPlus C3 Fully Synthetic oil is actually approved and listed by MB I can't see any issue using it.
