230CE EZL-KAT trimming plug - correct setting

Hi

My 230 CE has EZL-KAT ignition system. The handbook is very confusing. It referes to 230E/CE as cars without cat without cat - get timing set at MB dealer. Vehcilcels with cat, 260E, 300E/CE set to S. I interpret this to mean that as mine has a cat, it should be set to S, buit the language in the book is ambiguous. It mentions that 230E and 230CE should use 98 RON, and if not then timing should be adjusted by MB dealer. So is the S position on a 230CE for 95 or 98 RON? Makes no sense as I don't think there is any such thing as 98 RON unleaded.

My 230CE should have a cat (it has pre cats, and the EZL-KAT system for cat) but it has been removed at some point. Exhaust looks like a fairly professional mod/bodge (neat welding).

My car had the EZL-KAT trimming plug set to 4 when I got it. I have been told by an MB techie that it should be S. So I set it to S, and it runs lumpy and knocks a little bit, so I set it back to 4 and its fine.

Does anyone know what should it be? Can anyone with a 230CE, EZL-KAT system with cats confirm what their's has been set to?

102.96/98 engine Kat:

S for Premium fuel, N for Regular.

4 is 3deg retarded from S for "poor" Premium
6 is 3deg retarded from N for "poor" Regular

Given the UK Premium fuel is 95 RON, I would say you have the right setting using 4.

You could try S with the 97/98RON UK Super unleaded but it does cost a lot more....

Head gasket= head skimmed??

One thing that is often forgotten is that the engine compression ratio may not be standard. If the head gasket has gone in the past [quite likely on that engine:o] and the head has been skimmed to level it up, then the compression ratio will have been raised slightly. This means that all fuel recommendations/ignition timing settings from the factory may no longer be valid.:dk: Then its a try it and see situation. If you are curious you might want to get the fuel tank almost empty and fill up with premium (super unleaded) one time and try the ignition timing set at the factory recommended setting. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work tho.:(
