23mpg..made me shed a tear

my parallel universe is world renowned as being the most happening place ever :D The trees are pink and giraffes have fluffy cauliflowers on their heads, rock on! :D

And let that be a warning to you all - NEVER drink the water in Clitheroe....

yeah .. but you have no V8 soundtrack

Sorry to bust up your party, but later tonight Ill post a picture of our C220cdi Sequentronic doing 57.2mpg at the legal UK 70 AND 45.2 in Germany at 140mph..... all you big engined boys can only go 70... Im going 140 and smiling all the way to the BANK  :p :D

Just added picture of fuel economy. Used to get upto 66mpg, not been as good in recent times.

Now thats my sort of motor:D

140 from a C220? Unless it's chipped (or the wildly optimistic indicated 140), I'm not totally sure that's possible.

No its not chipped and Sequentronic have a top speed of 138mph, so 140 indicated allows for a bit of inaccuracies. Chipping it I would expect to see over 145mph real speed, my ML gets over 130mph chipped (on the gauge).

Whatcar info: http://www.whatcar.co.uk/car-review-performance.aspx?RT=264&ED=47652&U=0 = 136mph, but the Sequentronic handbook states 138mph.

We're only here once after all :D

Aaaah! BUT! :bannana: I live in a country where EVERY DAY I drive LEGALLY at these speeds :) .... wheres the 'only live once' with a big engine in England  is a falacy!
Live the dream dont imagine it!
Sorry to sound so crass, everyone is entitled to there own free choice and will, but in England I honestly cant see a reason for a big engine. You may break the law once and hit over 100mph... but at what expense, 23mpg or less - damage to the environment?

But equally, everyone's dream is different...what might be for you, might not be for someone else.

Yeah but ... I commute by train, and the low annual mileage I do in my 5 litre V8 causes a lot less damage to the environment than someone driving to work and back every day in a small hatchback!

i would echo that although even when its parked up on the drive i think the v8 is using fuel.:o

Now i've driven a few C220 Cdi's before and i can definately tell you 100% that you won't be doing 45mpg at 140mph, UNLESS you are going down a hill without pressing the accelerator.

I took a C220 CDI to Birmingham, steady speed in 3 figures, the car averaged 30mpg. Same run in a V12 S600 W140 on a full load cruising to Birmingham but with a full load, 25mpg.

On a motorway at high speeds a diesel is not as economical as people think.

I have driven 3-4 different 220 CDIs and they all average the same. On a motorway at 80-90 it will give mid to high 30mpg. Yes if you hold 70mph on a flat road you can see 50mpg+ but its the combined figure over a few hundred miles that really counts.

Besides if i wanted to do 140mph a C220 CDI wouldn't be my ideal choice.

I drove at 65mph steady and my C250 @52mpg, so yes its possible but who would drive like that all the time!

Erm! May I say, are you using a 220 CDI with an Auto box? If so, youve answered your own question!
The 57.3 was setting off from North Leeds, to North Shields, keeping legal, going up and down hills, nothing out of the ordinary, not trying to be mister tight git! The car was 2 up and loaded with kit!
Yes, the 45.2mpg I have on my meter includes the UK and the Amsterdam city driving and Holland 120km/h rules, but flat out in Germany. So, again, I ask the question, auto box?
Before I got the C220cdi, I drove several C's from German Hire Car (read: Europcar & Sixt) companies and the auto's drunk fuel. Manuals were faster and more fuel efficient. Also, leave the aircon off, it sucks power and fuel!

It was a manual that i took to Birmingham. The most basic spec car i'd seen, didn't have AC which i thought was standard on them!

I thought you said it gave you 45mpg at 140mph, hence my query.

Yes, thats how its posted, but no, its the overall mpg of the circa 300mile trip of which at least 100miles was flat out. A bit of poetic license, I should have reset the trip counter and got the exact mpg, but it highlights the point I was making: a big engine you never get to use above 70 in the UK and you pay the price in the wallet, a smaller engine gives you the economy day to day and it can hit the high speeds. Also, Im doing almost 140mph and still getting way more mpg than a big engine which is just chuntering about.

After a suped up cosworth that did less than 10mpg flat out (>170mph on guage) and a string of other 'high performance' vehicles I can see no point having them in the UK as you never get to use them and your always paying the penalty.

actually you can cruise at 85 to 90 mph on motorways and generally be OK

big engines are very relaxed and unstressed at high speed. At 90mph, my 55 V8 is doing about 2800rpm and 28mpg which is pretty good.

the V10 touareg diesel did 23mpg average on a 600 mile round trip to the lake district - 4 up with tons of luggage at c.90
