1981 240td automatic with the auto box 'flaring' between some gears. Before I go into the dianostics, I need to make sure the accelerator is adjusted correctly but I can find no diagrams showing my engine! I know that if is is too long or too short, gear shifts occur at the wrong time.

This is the general view of the engine

The black cable in the centre right is the idle speed adjustment knob from the dash board

This is the accelerator linkage from the driver

How do I adjust what?

As a secondary question, can someone recommend a vacuum tester for the auto box and vacuum system?

thanks

I adjusted the Bowden cable (middle picture, black plastic cable) so that when the idle knob on the dash is turned fully to the right, there is about 1mm play at the end of the cable where it attaches. Result? Almost all flaring has gone.
I didn't do this initially since it had been into a Bosch injection pump specialist for an overhaul of the pump and they had badly adjusted this. In fact I think the mechanic assumed that you control idling speed with this. In fact you don't, idle speed is set on the pump by adjusting the air control screw.
So, problem nearly solved!
