Hi folks

Just a heads up on GU10 led bulbs available from Ikea.

We have a load of GU10 fittings in the kitchen and changed a number of them to these http://m.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/art/80255907/
I can confirm that the light given off is comparable to a 50w halogen, not as white a light as the halogen but lights the area equally as bright.

In the minefield of led bulbs I would recommend them.

Hope this helps someone

Since my last abode where we had 19 GU10's in the kitchen & 6 more in the study Iv'e deliberately avoided them.
Firstly because we were always changing failed bulbs and seconly because of the power consumption/heat generated.
Had never been confident enough to change to LED GU10's because of lack of knowledge of the light output.
Mind you, at £4.00 per bulb, the £100 outlay would have taken several months to pay off!

That's a fantastic price - I was just about to start replacing my main GU10s with LEDs, so I know where I shall soon be off to!

Changed all our GU10s to LED over 3 years ago. No failures yet.
We ordered 'warm white' from a specialist lighting website after reading horror stories about eBay suppliers. They were around £10 each but everything else I was finding was a blue light.

So glad that these are now more widespread and available at a reasonable price.

Over 3 years I've not calculated but I presume they will have paid themselves off many times over.

Good to know their new ones are half decent thanks. The older ones weren't all that but might give some of these a try next time I'm in that direction.

I avoid halogen downlighters for the same reasons, but have been using Megaman CFL in place of tungsten lamps for years.

The savings and lack of heat far outweigh the cost.

Hi

I was using GU10 cfl's at 9w each they were ikea/osram ones and they gave out 180lm, these led's put out 200lm for 4w and light immediately. The only downside is the spread of the beam and they arent that pretty to look at compared to the diffuser screen of the cfl's.

Going to buy more today.

When I first investigated changing to led they were approx £30 each so the price is likely to drop further.

Interesting read here

£5 each at Tesco, and last time I looked they were three for two.
Phillips branded and excellent colour temperature.
So now I use 16W in the kitchen where I used 400W previously.

Also starting to replace cfl with led lamps in the table lamps around the house that are left on all day - Again great colour temp and great light output 4W is brighter than 11W cfl.
I reckon around a two year payback on these.

I fitted all the regular light bulbs with the IKEA GU10 4w bulbs and they are perfectly decent. At £4 each from a reputable source, I'm happy!

Finally got some to try yesterday and I'm very pleased too, slightly whiter than the 50w halogen they replaced but much the same brightness.

No more sauna while doing the washing up!

Not with Mrs Ted. She has them on in bright sunlight.

The Ikea ones are non-dimmable and 4W, so not equivalent to a 50 W halogen bulb.

I just replaced my kitchen GU10 halogens with dimmable LAP 5W LEDs from Screwfix. Bit more expensive than the Ikea ones but the light output and colour is very good and they work well with the dimmer.

All is not equal in the world of bulbs and light output.

Some 4w quote 250 lumens and other 4w quote 380 lumens.
I guess some are more efficient than others.

Then halogen GU10 bulbs all have different lumen figures even when comparing between 50w bulbs.

Either way, screwfix usually has some good prices and if you need dimmable then your options are slightly more limited.

The 50W halogens gave a good light at full power but were very yellow and dull when dimmed.

The LEDs give a very bright, white light at full power. The light seems to stay white when dimmed, just less intense. I like them a lot.

I've also gone for a trailing edge dimmer, which seems to work better with the LEDs.

Ooohh good point. I'm guessing a 'normal' dimmer would give flicker which would be more noticeable the dimmer you go.
Hadn't thought of that.

I think it depends on loading. If the total load from the LEDs is less than the minimum quoted for the dimmer then, yes, they flicker when dimmed.

My kitchen had 8 x 50W halogens, with a dimmer to handle the power. I think the minimum power quoted for the dimmer was 50W.

8 x 5W LEDs is 40W so they were OK at full power but flashed quite badly when dimmed. I got over it temporarily by leaving one halogen in to increase the load. I then found the lower power, T/E dimmer which works fine with 8 x LEDs.

One of the 8 11w CFL's in our kitchen has just blown, so I looked at these as an option - 1 bulb, parcelforce delivery £9!! Closest store to us is Lakeside, over an hour away plus the tunnel/bridge toll (£2 each way). Think I'll have another CFL off eBay for £4 delivered!
