Hi,
New mercerdes owner with early problem !
The car has starting Issues when the car is stopped for about 30mins to an hour after being at normal operating temperature. Has been OK if I stop for less time, for example if filling up with fuel.

It usually fires and starts for about a second before dying, then further attempts to start are just cranking only with no firing.

When the car does eventually start after approx 2 mins of trying, it usually requires nearly full throttle to help it fire up.

No issues when cold.

Could it be the dreaded crank sensor at the rear of the engine ?

What i know about the cdi engine can be written on the head of a pin but i would advise you get car plugged in and go from there, cps symptons are ok start from cold, when hot and stopped then non start, as yours is starting from hot you can prob ignore the cps.
Fuel running back, fuel leak, recent work? pop the top cover off the engine and have a quick look.

Lynall, I thought the fuel running back would make sense until you realise it starts from cold after a few hours, meaning the fuel would have to run back again in that time.
It has had a recent service too, so could be caused by the new fuel filter.
Have booked it into a specialist Tuesday so will see what happens.

Hi,

I had similar problems with my C320 petrol engine not long after I bought it. It wouldn't start when warm if left for more than a few minutes. The diagnosis from this forum was crank shaft sensor and sure enough when it was tested at MB that was the fault.

Hope this helps

I suffered with a similar problem on my 220 CDI, it turned out to be a leaking injector, (cost £170 each)

Hope this helps

hi check temp sensor on pump.

cheers Abby

Thanks for all of your comments.
I will let you know what the outcome is for the knowledgebase.

Garage had a look today and found a damaged black rubber pipe that had been rubbing against the engine under the engine cover. Just caught it in time as it had a pin hole sized leak that was just letting in air to the low pressure side. It would of eventually started leaking all over the engine.
When looking at the front of the engine there are two clear pipes that enter the high pressure pump and during starting you could see lots of air bubbles flowing through.
Fingers X'd problem solved !
Now onto the next fault and only owned it 4 days !
