Hi everyone.

Did a longish journey on the motorway yesterday morning. As you can see I got 28.3 mpg... OK, I know I had only done 85 miles and I know the average speed was pretty low but the M3/M25 at this time of the day is pretty grim. Not bad for a 5.5L V8!!!!

Yeah, its suprising what these big cars can return...of course if they are just ticking over they wont drink much fuel. Try booting it on a fast run then return the MPG!

Yup, I've had 29 mpg from my SL500 on a long run ... and that's older and heavier than your C55!

I can just get 30 mpg from my Vito driven in a similar manner, but of course diesel fuel costs significantly more.

Does it?

The difference is down to about 8p/litre now, isn't it?

It's currently 9p/litre where we are (101.9 vs 92.9), that's 10% more ... which I think most people would regard as a significant difference?

for a fill up, assuming 55 litres, that's about £5

That's about right if you are not heavy with the right foot although my normal average is about 23.8, but then the C55 is a car to enjoy.

Both of mine have 75 litre tanks ... so that's £6.75 extra.

Even V-Power is cheaper than diesel at the moment (by 2p per litre).

If i ever did an 85 mile journey in a car with over 300bhp and a beautiful V8 soundtrack and i managed to return that mpg, i'd know that i'm getting too sensible to own such a car!

Nice mpg though.

My dad can get 30mpg from his SL500
The R129 became a bit more fuel-efficient from '99 onwards, when the V8 changed from the 4 valve/cyl. M119 to the 3 valve/cyl. (plus twin spark) M113. That engine carried forward to the R230.

without sounding like Ian Flemming

You only live once - V8, Boot it. You want mpg go CDI.

So the truth is I don't do long journeys very often - I have a nice sensible Honda diesel for that! Most of the time, I get mpg figs in the low to mid teens cos round where I live there are some wonderful country roads and you're right - with a nice V8 under my right foot, why on earth would I want to potter along doing 28mpg? But it was an interesting exercise!!!

Spoke to a customer of mine the other day who runs an M5, he said he was lucky to get 12 mpg out of it

Serves him right for buying a Beemer! ;)

The best I ever managed from my E55 was an indicated 26.4 mpg. Still not that bad considering it does weigh a lot more than the C55 so would think about the same ratio between the two.
