Hi

i would like to get some sort of workshop manual to aid me in mechanical work on the engine of my 280SL (1985 model).

Haynes do a manual for the W123 series that covers 250 and 280 engines.

can anyone confirm if its the same 280 engine (110?) as in my SL?

thanks

Derek

Basic engine is the same. Some variants have slight internal differences. Some have different Jetronic stuff. I use the Haynes. If you want to wait till Sun you can have a look first.

i believe it is... infact im almost sure...

The brooklands manual is good..

that would be great if you could bring it along thanks.

there are a couple of cheap ones ending on ebay soon 2nd hand i think so if they are dead cheap i may bid anyway, but if it comes to buying one for >£20 i'll wait to see yours and compare....

i also want to check the timing etc and make sure all the mixture etc is spot on.... does it detail this? Seller told me his uncle who maintained the car (seemed to know his stuff) adjusted an "allan bolt" ready for me to take the car on a very long journey (manchester to scotland) and i want to make sure everything is set up correctly, not blindly!

cheers

Derek

Info here http://northernresource.com/mercedes/107-specs.htm would indicate the following The W107-042 chassis 280SL Roadster with the M110-990 motor was made between 1979 and 1985 (K-Jet inj.). some good Jetronic injection tips and specs here. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w11...ch-d-jetronic-k-jetronic-troubleshooting.html

this a good collections of links and how to's here http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1325086-interesting-links-107-a.html

edit:-your seller's uncle was probably referring to the allen headed screw which controls the idle mixture- this should really only be done on an exhaust gas analyser since it bears on the sensor plate arm and effects the initial position of the control plunger and is incredibly sensitive. TWEAK is the operative word here not MOVEMENT!

do you reckon a Bosch Service Centre is the best place to get the car tuned up? i dont need or want anything replaced (hope to do most work myself), but would like the timing correct and the mixture......

any competent mechanic can tune these engines up.. not rocket science at all..

if i buy a strobe gun thing is this all i need to do it myself, with the haynes manual pages in hand?

The injection system in the W123 is different from the W107 , however , the earlier W114 series 'New Generation' cars that preceeded the W123 had the same setup as the W107 .

As the guys have said the injection on these cars is pretty simple and easy to work on. However the problem you will come up against is finding someone who is familiar with these older systems. The best tool for fault finding on these systems IMHO is the older style of oscilloscope based engine/exhaust type analyser like this http://buy1.snapon.com/products/diagnostics/sun450.asp found in many small garages.
Unlike modern "plug n play" digital systems which tend to use fault codes generated by onboard ECU's these older systems display ignition wave forms and analogue voltages which require a degree of interpretation for good diagnosis so you need to get a hold of someone who knows how to use and interpret the data they produce.

i managed to get the used 123 haynes manual for just under a tenner posted so i'm pleased with that.

Derek,

I am not sure whether a W123 has a thin radiator or not, it think the 280SL has a recirulating coolant system, whereas the W123 has a no loss system
