Hi,

Just brought a 1984 W123 without an MOT. Aim to take her to Central Asia around Easter time, about 4,000 miles, for charity. Loads of things to fix, heres the first:

Failed pre-MOT on emissions, burning oil, kicks / spits oil out the back when reving. Also loads of oil around the air intake. Not sure where to start but has been suggested that its something to do with valve guides. Either do the fix myself or get someone in, dont want to be ripped off! Any help would be great! Need a quick and cheap fix.

I'd be looking at rings as well as valve guides - that sounds like a sick engine

after having read your other posts I'd be sorely tempted to get rid and buy another one with fewer faults. For the price of getting the head and other potential faults fixed you could buy another car and have change.....

A cheap car is only cheap until it starts costing you money to fix.

Looking at your other problems and assuming that they are just the tip of the iceberg you are going to have very little change out of £1000 even if you get all the work done cheaply - for that money......well, that's what I paid for my W124 estate 2 years and 30,000 relatively trouble free miles ago :)

There is an old maxim that applies here...

"There is nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes"

Andy
