I'm struggling with only having my SL now(circumstances) as I do a lot of tinkering and bike/motorbike/custom car stuff. I can't get a towbar for my car so I'm thinking about a 2nd vehicle.

Does anyone know if my 03/53 SL could be insured on a classic policy? It only does 4k a year if that, and less if I had a second vehicle.

Or how can you insure a 2nd vehicle at a sensible price? I'm only looking for an old small car that can Tow a trailer.

Matt

Ask your current insurer as many will match your NCB on a second vehicle. The definition of "classic" for insurance varies from company to company. No harm in asking but I think it may be too young.

I think it is to young, I only pay £250 a year fully comp for it, I don't want to pay more for an old workhorse!
My insurance is due the end of January which is why I'm putting the feelers out now.

Also the other issue is, you can't get a classic policy unless you have a standard policy(that's my understanding) and I may not get the 2nd car straight away. I have been toying with getting a classic car as my 2nd car but that isn't practical...... Hmmm

In general classic is 20-25 yrs.Might need a volvo/merc estate. And yes 2nd car for most.Oh and for some the sportier versions get classic status earlier.

Classic car policy is not earning any NCD and will have conditions like: can't be daily car, etc. You can have only classic car for some time as long as you don't use it for general transport every day.

I think you need access to another car to qualify for a classic policy.

Got the impression this was the case when talking to Classic Line

Hmm. Looking for insurance for my CLK at present. Just got a qoute from Direct Line for £1015 FC protected. Both drivers 40+ 15 years no claims, no points. Living in a City is rubbish!

This is the case with some but not Lancaster. Got two cars insured through them for last 5 years and don't need to have other cars.

At Pete Best (only insurer to recognise 2001 CLK as classic) i was told that the 'classic' must be the 2nd car and daily driver must normally be newer, but in my case my daily driver is 20 years old and not on a classic policy.

in answer to your question about 2003 sl being insured as classic, peter best does insure any car more than 10 years old specially mercedes as classic.

pls bare in mind agreed value is just that it is for replacing your car not the price u paid for the car, so with inflation and price rises could be alot more than u think but i suggest 10k probably the correct u can try higher and see if they accept, they wil require 5-6 pics of the car inside and out
