3 litre 190E

Why didn't they stick in a 300-24 valve...same amount of effort with even more power.

they could have easily doubled the bhp/ton benefit from the work involved had they used the 24v version.

cheers

If you buy a 2.6 190, and a M103 24-valve, it should cost bugger all...it's a straight swap !

interesting! might be one for me in the future! What sort of turbo do you put on these? garret?

Thats why they did a 3.2 AMG version of the 190E which produced around 235bhp I think.

you know, i really really like that.

but i like the idea of a 190 3.0-24 even more......

Presumably it's not 'bugger all' unless you're a very competent mechanic. For most of us, it's a fair chunk of change.

Perhaps (...guess...) £1000 labour?? Maybe add another £500 for sourcing and replacing the bits that you only find out are broken during the work?

I don't agree actually.
Changing one identical block for another is easy.
You start with an m103 powered 2.6 190. Same block as a 3 litre 12 valve and 24 valve. You buy a cheap 24 valve 124 with a good engine and box. One in one out - no way is that 20 hours labour. Yes theres fiddling about with the ECU and fuel lines etc, but it would be a very straightforward conversion, as conversions go. Of course if you start with a 4 pot 190, ouch!

Thing is, as with any major jobs or conversions, sometimes stuff inevitably can and does go wrong, or unexpected extra work/parts are needed.

Whilst it's certainly possible to swap an engine/box over in much less than 20 hours (2-2.5 days work?), when you're converting a ~ twenty year old car with secondhand bits you need to allow sufficient time to do things properly. Ie - replacing worn/broken parts, cleaning stuff, rusted/broken bolts/clips etc, checking/testing, leaks etc.

I'd be less concerned about exactly how many £££s or how much time it took, so long as a proper, neat/safe/reliable job was done :)

I know the theory, but these are now >15 years old. For every 4 bolts that need to be undone, one is going to play hardball. :D (I've a genuine/casual interest having had a 190 2.6 for a while and now with an M104-driven W124)

£1000 was a guess, but maybe Jay could give us some idea of how long/much he'd estimate for a like-for-like swap if all went smoothly?

If you're talking about an e220/280/320 don't forget the fuelling/ignition systems are completely different -hence the 300-24valve being "easy" by comparison.

The engine in it is out of my old 300TE, it's a good car!

It only took him a day, and I suspect it's done properly.

I've known Rob for a few years and he's not the kind of chap to bodge things.

Its an easy conversion at the end of the day (not that I could do it mind you)

He takes these cars apart all day every day and has more knowledge than most on how to do something like this.

Apologies, I stand corrected :thumb:
