W201 190E 2.3
Hi all,
My name is Axel and Im from Oslo. In my 20s and contemplating moving up in the world - that means going from a W201 to a W124.

Ive eyed up a 1986 300 E 188 bhp that got the full AMG treatment in the fall of 1990 - a full 3.4 transplant and conversion. Doesnt say so in the V5 only listed as a 300 E boggo but the history seems legit.

I especially fancy the fact that it has the getrag 5-speed dogleg manual.
Is the 3.4 AMG a solid engine, or does it share the weaknesses with the 300-24 engine?

Would I be better off finding a 3.6? Power seems similar, the 3310 cc 3.4 churns out 272 bhp, same as the E36..

Also, is the manual preferable and/or faster?

Thanks,
axel

Get it bought!

Welcome to MBClub.

Sounds like a rare car, if it is legit. Tempting to get it anyway if the price is right and it's running well.

A member here - jaymanek - has one and may be able to advise further when he gets back from his holiday.

1318/1418 kiloes, manual. Should shift rather well..

Any car you fancy of that vintage should be worth a punt!

Check with insurance company first though as they don't 'like' this sort of thing and premiums could be stupid compared to buying a genuine AMG.

(Not informing them is the same as driving with no insurance at all in case you are tempted)

It could quite easily be a genuine factory AMG - this is pre AMG/ Merc merger. They are rare and desirable. I do not know if they came with gertrag or autobox but someone on here is likely to know. Bodywork more likely to give problems than the engine and drivetrain. Sounds like a nice find.

hmm

Alot of stuff done in the last year it seems.
Are the 5-speed manuals preferable on the 300 3.4 model?
The bloke is asking £6000 for it ( LHD, Im in europe) so Im a bit disappointed that it doesnt have the Aero wheels but rather some hideous BBS wheels...
Perhaps try to get him down a bit in price?

hmm

depends on what I can haggle the seller down to.
He tells me one of the front shocks has a small leak and that the diff needs looking at.

But I do like it, just undecided on the manual bit yet.

Am I right in saying that a full AMG W124 SLS suspension kit is 2500 quid?

Buy it, quick!!!

Any reflections re: the asking price?

Seller asking 8400 euro.
Bit steep considering he is unable to produce documents verifying the vehicles history.

Please, please buy it...very, very authentic and has the rare Sportline seating option.:bannana::bannana:
As a purist I'd change the wheels and the corner and tail lights ... would increase value to a true collector ;)

I'm curious why the rear is so high...

Sedans typically didn't have SLS...

The rear of my W124 sat that high after changing the rear springs & shocks.

Agree it would look incredible with the original wheels and orange indicators

This one has SLS according to the seller..
Needs new rear and front lights yes, and some Aero I black rims..

hmm

It looks authentic I agree, but hard to verify whether its a real AMG non? VIN comes up as a 1986 300E.
Did all the 3.4 AMG engines come with a KAT, or was there also a Non-CAT version?
Does the cat dull the engine somewhat?

hm

Do they have archives for so old cars anyway?
keep in mind this conversion would have been done in 1990.
Anyone know spesifically who to ask at AMG?

Vin

Here is the VIN
