C180 Proper gearbox
This was born in another thread!

Just out if interest and I know they are very different cars, I thought I’d compare my C180 at 3000RPM to Brian’s E320CDI.

Brian’s: 3000rpm = 110mph

Mine: 3000rpm = 67mph (5th gear manual)

What speed do you do at 3000rpm in top gear?

Drive carefully when checking.

Can't remember spot on, but I think it's 80mph.

Will let you know for sure tommorrow!

EDIT: Just checked a prev. thread. Def 80mph @ 3000rpm for me in 5th.

EDIT EDIT: Just made me think. A 6 speed would be nice

About 90 at 3000 revs in 5th. Drop down to 3rd at 90 and it really flies though :bannana:

Bet Brian gets 35 to the gallon at that 3000 while I get 22ish :(

90mph is flat out in 3rd for me! That's when I change to 4th and hang on to 120mph. So I have calculated theoretically of course ;)

I can get 140mph in 3rd, but that is with a 4-speed...

I'll check tommorow to see what 3000rpm brings it upto.;)

Well, I get to 4000 in 3rd at 90 so still 2.5k revs left to go which is nice. Can't better V12

Get to 155 without too much of an issue though :bannana: (twos in France by the way).

V12, you must be limited too! What will it do without? I have been told about 175 in mine.

Graham, I have a friend with a C230K and it shifts really well, much better than my C240 ever did. Was thinking of swapping for a C43AMG as i just love the C class but the wife did not hence the CLK

110 at 3000 rpm.

1st @ 6000rpm = 37mph
2nd @ 6000rpm = 80mph
3rd @ 6000rpm = 125mph
4th @ 5500rpm = 156mph
5th @ 6000rpm = 156mph

Shude,

I would be intetrested to know how your electronic 5 speed auto compares to my manual.

Roughly:

2nd @ 6000 rpm = 59mph
3rd @ 6000 rpm = 90mph
4th @ 6000 rpm = 120mph

I very much doubt I will be able to give you those figures because I think it shifts before I hit 6000, I can certainly try tho' . In my experience you have gone beyond the power band at 6000rpm and are well into the "noise band" instead! I think if I keep the kickdown button depressed it will keep on gassing until the very last second.

I will try on my way home, if I remember, although 120mph may be an issue unless I really try hard on the twisty A/B roads. If I don't post a reply later it's because I'm in a ditch, burning in my car.

When I say 6000rpm, I mean near enough. I think the limiter actually hits at about 5900ish.

I know it's not the peak power, but we are talking max. in gear speeds.

Of course I do.

However I am Limited to 4600 rpm max on my diesel, compared to your 6000 rpm petrol.;)

So equivalent is 3000 rpm Diesel & 4000 rpm Petrol approx

Just a nats nad under 75mph @ 3000rpm on mine.

Interesting that their is a variation on the C's here, I would have thought the autoboxes and diffs would have had the same ratios but obviously not.

Fudger, ive been told by some very reliable sources, that without any modifications to gearing etc, just de-restricted, it will reach exactly 169mph. pretty good goin i think from a 2.5tonne car.

As it is a pre 1995/96 model it only has a 4 speed auto instead of the later 5 speed...

Feels solid at 150, not even breaking a sweat. ;)

V12 m8, I bet with the correct/approapriate gearing you could do 190+. Clearly, the engine is not the limiting factor.

I have heard of a CLK430 doing over 190 with only gearing/diff mods but it is only 1.55 tonnes in weight.

Jimmy, jsut goes to show why jumping from one C to the next can seem completely different!

V12, just clicked on your sig link. Nice tune man :bannana:

Have you called the AA m8?

What model car is it V12? As its pre 96 I guess not the one in your sig?

Technically it is a S600C, but better known as the CL600.

Being the 600, it is fully loaded and we have done some subtle mods + fitted 20" alloys to finish the car off.

BTW, it is not technically my car anyway, i just drive it :)

Fudger, i have heard of these doing 180 with brabus modding the diff...
I have researched into it, and there is nothing that has big enough flange sizes with a lower ratio. basically, i can only improve acceleration by changing to another standard diff.
Would need someone more clever than me to internally change the diff, which would be expensive.

Or I put a later 5-speed box in, which i already have, they claim about 175 from it, with much smoother shifts etc.
Of course, it needs de-restricting too, but when do i ever use that power.

Never even had it to the limiter while i was driving, but been the passenger in germany with the speedo reading off the clock (160)

My daily car at the moment is a 280CE (123) and it is slow after my 190 and 600.

 ;)

well, the engine and gearbox didn't like it but I tried these out.

2nd @ 5800 rpm = about 55mph
3rd @ 5800 rpm = about 85mph

I didn't do the 4th or 5th gear test, although I can tell you that I reckon at 5800 rpm in 5th it's prolly going to be doing about 150mph-ish, I did 145mph and it was at about 5500, still had a little bit of "go" left in it.

btw my car does *exactly* 80mph @ 3000 rpm in 5th.

I have found that I get very good fuel economy at 80mph, however if I go over 80mph the fuel goes VERY quickly, it's like a switch, 80mph == good; 81mph == awful.

Just under 80MPH for me.
