My owners manual lists 2 sizes of wheels depending on if you have "sport suspension" or not. The printout of my vehicle data does not show a sports suspension code a such but however it does list "code 653 sports chassis with L.A.Wheels, 8 hole" . Is this what the manual is referring to?

The wheels presently fitted to my car look like the AMG flat-disc type 7 1/2J 16 H2 E40s with the code c7400119 stamped on them. The tyres are the 205/50 zr16 size.

I would like to buy a set of steel wheels for winter use. What ET should I get seeing as the ET for my wheels at present is 40, but the manual shows ETs of 49 for non-sports suspension steels size 195/65/15 M+Styres with 61/2J x15s on a 300CE and a sports suspension size of ET42 on 7Jx15s fitted with 205/60 R15 91T M+S?

Do I need to make a trip to the dealers to confirm the suspension type?

Being a 24v car, you will need the 7J steels to clear the brake callipers...
The 6.5J wheels are only for the older 103engined 300 coupe...

I think you are incorrect about the 7J being a minimum for the 300CE-24v.

I quote from the owners manual:"Technical Data 300 CE-24, Disk Wheels and Tyres, Vehicles without sport suspension, Light Alloy disk wheel: 6 1/2 J x 15 H 2 ET48" and it goes on to say "Summer tyres 195/65 ZR 15".

So what other Mercedes might have the same size as this?

I have just checked the 6 cars we have here with steel's on and all apart from two have 7J on them, so seems highly likely, but i would see your dealer on whether it has the sport suspension or not in that case.
