before i travel 4 hours to look at this car any idea what the tape is on the top of the engine?

I think that's a plastic cover over the HT leads. I have a different engine in my 300CE so I can't be sure.

It would not put me off the car. You may find another cover online or in a breaker's yard.

The engine looks nice and clean.

My biggest concern is always rust but in Spain that's unlikely to be an issue.

The clips that hold the top and bottom part of the HT lead guide get weak over time, quite common and nothing to worry about.
