31.6mpg good or bad?

Hi All,
Have had my CLK320 2003 for a few weeks now and mostly its been going to work and back which is only 4 miles away so the mpg has been around 18 or 19mpg which is very poor but what can you do, the price you pay for driving these cars.

However, went down exeter today (I live in Milton Keynes) so is nearly 200 miles away and the mpg shows 31.6mpg average so I am taking this to be good. My tank holds about £50 at current petrol prices and in town I can only get 250 or 260miles out of it but today managed 350 and I could have pushed it more on reserve but didnt want to risk it, so I guess I shouldn't be complaining as I have had worse cars for petrol. Good example being my last car which was a Nissan350Z.

Do I take this to be normal and eveyone else experience is similar to mine?

Cheers

Andy

I would take that MPG all day long from the car.

Goes to show that big-engines arent as penal as some say.

I'd say in isolation it's good, but a CLK55 ain't far behind

I think you're car's MPG is about right, and as you say a 350Z was worse despite having a similar engine type in a similar sized and weight car.

Where is oorjim? He has one and would be better placed to comment than me.

If it's any help, as a guide, I drive 26 miles into MK and back each day, on a selection of 'A' roads and dual carriageways.

My c200k (1.8) returns between 29 and 33mpg, depending on how I drive. The average speed for the journey (either way, incidentally) shows pretty much 48mph every time.

On one occasion I tried to drive as frugally as possible and she returned 39.8, but that's the best ever.

On a longer journey (dual carriageway and motorway) the other day, of 100 miles, she averaged 31.2 and an average speed of 68mph.

Hope that helps as some point of reference?? I'd personally be really impressed with the figures you're quoting.

Sounds about right, we're averaging a little less in the wife's E320.

LOL My car does 31 on average and it's a diesel - a lot of it is to do with the way you drive it and how far... :o:o

Sounds about right. My wife gets about 26mpg on her daily 25 mile commute and somewhere between 31 -34 mpg on a long motorway run. She has a CLK320 convertible.

Thanks Guys,
I know these days some of the cars specially some diesels get over 40 to 50mpg but I decided to go with my heart than may head and I just wanted to check this with some of you to see what everyone else is experiencing.

I don't care much for the mpg as I love the car but at least I now know. MK is the roundabout city so stop starts don't help hence the 18mpg.

cheers

Andy

I can get 22mg round town and 400 miles to a tank, which is £50 for my 4.3 V8

Sounds about right to me too.

Hi
I would say that’s about the same as mine. The best I have had from mine is about 36mpg and that was coming back from Liverpool but most of the time it’ in the low thirties and I’m getting the same in town 18-19 mpg.

I’m going up to Arisaig for the weekend next week so I will let you know how it goes on the trip there and back.

Jim.

I'd say its good regardless of 'type' of car for the engine size. The problem with large meaty engines is they're ideal on long trips but a pain on short distances...

(Either that or the fault with all my petrol cars has been my somewhat leaden right foot).

E320 V6 managed to get 550 miles from a tank when I was on my way back from Croatia which I think is like 35mpg or something.

My S500 used to average about 27-29mpg on my long runs into Germany.

Best I ever got out of my CLK5 AMG Cab was a shade under 28mpg on a 100 mile run, but averaged around 20mpg over the time I had the car. My CLS320 CDI is running around a 30.1mpg average with best figures of 39.9mpg. Sounds like your 320 did well on your longer run...

31.6mpg good or bad?

Hmmmmmm.

For SL65 AMG it's good.

For SmartForTwo, it's bad.

For QE2 it's unbelievable.

For Oliver Reed, it's just another night out.

I guess it's down to your perspective.

My 270 has never even seen 31!! Cripes you must have a lead boot on....

Well funny, my hubby and i were having this conversation last night :D
And yes, we concluded that i am pretty heavy on the accelerator - and brake.
But I have promised to drive more carefully - coz we're only getting 400 miles to a tank - and that's in a good week...

Trouble is, i do my main part of my driving in urban areas - when we go a longer distance on the motorway we can see over 50mpg. (With my husband driving lol)

Last 3700 miles in my W210 E320 Est have averaged 29.5mpg. It took me 91 hours or so to do that averaging 40mph. That's one big trip of 500 miles which resulted in 33.5 mpg, then lots of short journeys of a few miles in town and lots of 30 mile drives of a mixture which nearly always returns 28 - 30 mpg.

Well as an update I had to go to Sheffield yesterday and as it was rainy and M1 was busy mostly it was 70 some parts 50 and well some others that wasn't so busy I went a bit more than you know what! ;-)

I managed to get 32mpg but more interestingly I have now done 340miles and stil have close to a quarter tank left which means 400miles per tank or close to it so I am chuffed as I expected much worse.

I used to get 250-300 miles per tank in town on my 350Z but that was £80 to fill the tank but then again it was a 300 horse power car.

Overall I am impressed with the mpg performance specially on the motorway.

Does the torque convertor lock up in 1st gear?

When I drove a E320 petrol, the torque convertor does not lock up in 1st at all whereas in my S320 diesel, the torque convertor locks up almost immediate when I accelerate modestly and I can feel the direct drive when accelerating.

I think it makes quite a big different in urban driving.
