320 Coupe

It isn't a Sportline though, the options list says sports chassis, there should also be an option stating, sportline (consisting of codes ***) etc.

Who's is it?

I think it is. It's got code 653, which mine has, and it's got a Sportline steering wheel too.

My car doesn't have an option stating "Sportline"

Maybe then, but my new one does, and it has a sportline gear knob & badges...;)

Tell us more Ady

BTW, is your one a slightly older model though? I know the earlier ones had the badges etc.

Good to see you back on here :)

Yes it is, because I wanted the 300-24, I can't say too much though, full details and pics at the weekend...

Having recently gone through this with MB Croydon.. Sports chassis options are 650 15 hole alloys, 651 steel wheels, 653 8 hole alloys. Sportline interior packs are I think 952 and 953 based on my bad german translation of a W124 guide somewhere on this forum.

I think the car belonged to a member of the other forum.

I agree. NO UK cars had the badging from the factory either. I have the 1991 pricelist, and the Sportline options were the sports chassis, the steering wheel, and sportline cloth seats. Most people chose the leather of course.

Options 653 and 650 are effectively "sportline" on the coupe.

I guess you can have components of the sportline package and it seems that one of the least opted option was the sportline seats themselves. My car is a 93 pre-facelift model with option code 653 which has the sportline steering wheel, sports chassis, 8 hole alloys 7.5 by 15 but no badge so does that make mine a sportline?

Just to help clear things up   :D, my 1990 300E-24 has got:

650 = sports chassis with 15-hole light alloy rims (though it's (now) got 8-hole alloys)
243 = sports seats front and rear
281 = sports steering wheel
950 = sports undercarriage (or so I thought; mbclub.ru describes it as "sportline (consisting of codes 65/0, 243, 281)")

... and "Sportline" badges

German translated (badly) site here

The Sport Line vehicles
Sports Line called himself a sports package, which in 1989 ordered from the factory.
Bild23_kl.jpg

Since trade in used cars with such terms like advertised and it is all part of this package or individually to buy there, it should be in the data map to the code 953 or 952.

Only then is a complete original and Sport Line vehicle.

Sports Line code included a 953 by 22mm deep gelegtes tougher and chassis with other shocks, springs and stabilizers, which reduce side slope.

Furthermore, these vehicles had 15-inch aluminium wheels (either Gullideckel or 8-hole rims with 205/60/15 'he tires) and a measuring 39cm in diameter, leather sport steering wheel (rather than 40cm in the series).
Schaltknauf bzw.

Wählhebel waren ebenfalls mit Leder überzogen.

Gear selector and were also coated with leather.

Vorne gab es noch Sportsitze.

In front there were sports seats.

The seat cover fabric diamonds or other leather equipment were also still positions of this package.

Sports Line emblems on the selector switch, or at the front and behind the front wheel Seitenbeplankung also included with this.

Sports Line code 952 included the (in my eyes) rare and beautiful individual rear seats

Bild24_kl.jpg

mit der Holzverkleidung in der Mitte.

With the wood paneling in the middle.

Dies war beim Kombi allerdings nicht lieferbar.

This was when combined, however, not available.

Furthermore, the direct steering and there were four-valve for a special six-cylinder sports gear with 5 courses, which was stepped closer than the other and where the first course was left behind.

Anyone know what Gelegtes refers to, think its something to do with the word laid - 22mm lower lying car?

Interesting as it implies that the sportline chassis 952 is different to the 650 sport chassis...

"Sportline Code 953 umfasste ein um 22mm tiefer gelegtes und härteres Fahrwerk mit anderen Dämpfern, Federn und Stabilisatoren, welche die Seitenneigung verringern."

- Sportline code 953 involves ride height lowered by 22mm, and stiffer suspension with different springs, anti-roll bars and dampers, to reduce roll.

"Dies war beim Kombi allerdings nicht lieferbar"

- This refers to the individual rear seats being unavailable in the estate cars.

"Weiterhin war die Lenkung direkter und es gab für die Vierventilsechszylinder ein spezielles Sportgetriebe mit 5 Gängen, welches enger gestuft war als die übrigen und wo der erste Gang links hinten lag"

- furthemore the steering was more direct, and on the 24-valve 6-cylinder cars, a 5-speed close-ratio sports gearbox with dog-leg first gear was available.

(My German is a bit rusty)

I've got them :bannana:

Does it have the wood covering the cubby like the pic - never seen that...

Mine is the common or garden split seats with a wooden ashtray capping and a strange (and never used) compartment with a fitted loose leather bolster thing under the armrest...

Difference between sports chassis and sports undercarriage anyone... Perhaps MB Croydon were correct

I think the sportline features were a significant difference in the early coupes and convertibles BUT as the cars evolved it became of less importance because many of the sportline options were incorporated as standard in the later cars anyway eg.

* smaller diameter and leather covered steering wheel as standard on my later 320

* leather covered gear knob to match.

* sports front seats with more of a wrap around side bolsters as standard in my coupe.

* lowered suspension on 320 model convertible as standard on later car.

* wider 7 inch wheels as standard on later 320 convertible car

* wider 205 tyres on later convertible car

Depends what you mean by 'later'. Mines Oct '94 (fairly late) and those were all options.
