Hi all

i have a 300sl 24v (91) with a suspect h/gasket.

Anyone know whether a 320 engine (which i think is a 24v engine anyway) would go in? just looking at ways of solving the problem easily....as there are not that many 300-24v cars out there that i could drive-test the engine then strip the car, there seem loads of 320's though !

cheers

Had to do head gasket on wifes 104 e320 24valve so they are not immune either, in fact if you do a google they are famous for it:D
I would strip what you have and have a look see first.

the 320 is the next generation engine set up and is the first all electronic engine produced by merc.

Both fuel and ignition are all controlled by just one sophisticated computer.

An absolute minefield in terms of components, wiring and time required.

as david says, this is just not possible, or at least not even slightly practical.

carrying out head gasket work is not all that difficult in comparison.

yep, I agree now.

cheers all

I'd just get stuck into it - you have abolutely nothing to lose whatsoever. Get it stripped! :)

If it's only a gasket swap you could have it done in a day or two and it shouldn't cost much more than £100-200 in parts.

Mercs normally come apart nicely too, I didn't have a single damaged nut/bolt/clip/hose or anything when I rebuilt one of my old 2.5-16s.

Same with mine, Olly said everything came apart really well with only minor knuckle grazing!:D

John no...no....no...what are you thinking? Just get the gasket done, the 300-320 swap will be a total nightmare.....

stick the 320 in it and megasquirt it!

My 190 used to house a 2.6 12v M103

3.2 dropped straight in and using the complete wiring loom from an S class apparently it only needed about 8 wires transplanting from the original loom.
So its certainly possible if you don't want it to look totally factory.

However I am now rewiring the engine bay for DTA so it can run the turbos more successfully

I can second that. When I did the clutch on mine I broke nothing!

what's DTA?

It's an aftermarket engine management system.
