Pffffffffffffffft to the Beemer convertible!

Off the lights in my C270cdi we were near enough neck and neck up to about 90mph and then we took a right turn and my merc kinda skidded (understeered) into the other lane and mr Beemer kept his line and got ahead and got off and left me feeling very hacked off at this car!

90 mph on 225's R16's should be able to take a bend!

my old 320d on 195's took bends better than this!

2.7 5-pot with 170bhp diesel vs a 3liter inline 6 with 231bhp petrol - your merc did well keeping side by side with it but then your driving let you down! :|

Advanced driving lessons and some coilovers after, then you should be good to go ;)

and your car is ~100kg heavier, quite a lot of that over the front wheels too, which would not help with the understeer issue

Buy some track time........safer and you'll learn some good car control skills.

Hello

If the BMW was an auto then it would have been close, the Auto's in the 3 series verts are not great unlike those in a merc.

A manual however I doubt he was trying that hard?

My old 330ci Vert was as quick as a type R to 80mph and third gear and then the BM would pull away slightly. I would guess 60 was around 6.9 seconds? not that quick given the engine size but I generally just cruised round in it.

I'm thinking a standard 270cdi would be around 9-10 seconds?

Either way I'm sorry but in this weather I would rather be in the vert going slower :)

330ci ? You wouldn't even have seen which way it went......

If i ever win the lottery....You sir will be the first person who I don't know that I will invite to my mansion party!

Advanced Driving lessons and coilovers maybe the best bet!

I had a manual 330Ci conv. for a few years. Straight line performance was decent enough (0-60 sub-7 secs) but the real strength of the car was the way it handled round bends - beautifully balanced.....as the OP found out!

Chattonmill/wemorgan - the OP said convertible, so I assume that was the Ci in question;) But you're right - both coupe and conv are designated Ci.

a visit to Specsavers for me :)

I have to say, even though I hate BMW with a passion (past experiences) They handle better than a thai massage with a happy ending!

I've never driven an AMG but would it be safe to say that an M car can outhandle an AMG?

I dont really like bmws too, when you buy an AMG you dont really notice that in the real world i've never had any handling issues with my E55 AMG and i've had alot of fun with alot of M3's and audi s5's.

maybe bmws do handle better than mercs but i doubt you will notice it in the real world, maybe if you take it on the track then yeah and sometimes its all down to the driver..

bmw handle better - mercedes are faster in a staright line!

I'd have to say that this reinforces my (subjective) opinion that a lot of modern cars are 'over-tyred' ; more rubber does not always equal more grip since the same weight spread over a greater contact area actually reduces the contact pressure . More contact area can be benficial up to a point in the dry but positively dangerous in the wet !
