Hi

My 380slc failed its MoT because of play in this steering component - I think the part may be called the slide bearing from doing a bit of trawling the service CD but am not sure? Does anyone have any ideas of what it's called and where I can get a new one or service kit? Also, any ideas on how to get the vacuum seats to lock down properly as this was the other failing? Or a shortcut to get through the MoT?

Many thanks, Owen

What you have indicated is called the steering damper-its a little shock absorber made by bilstein or stabilus. they do wear out but I am surprised the car failed on that! About £30 from MB and slightly cheaper from eurocarparts- an easy DIY. Item 101 here http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...&L=765.701&CT=F&cat=048&SID=46&SGR=120&SGN=05

Are you sure it wasn't item 26 the drag link- that would be an MOT FAILURE-its the 2 ball joints at each end that go.

as far as the seats go one of the locking elements has probably gone-- item 5 http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...&L=765.701&CT=F&cat=048&SID=80&SGR=165&SGN=04 but you might simply have a leak in the system. If you know anyone with a Mityvac http://www.mityvac.com/ you should be able to test each component/ the vacuum lines

Idler arm bush.
ITEM 53.

Pull the steering right then left quickly and it will probably knock.

The repair kit is aprox £30 from a Merc dealer.
