In a dealer's today I was lamenting the fact that my recent new E-Class has got the 7G Tronic box rather than the 9G Tronic as our German chums get. That's not to say I don't like what I've got, but we always want more, don't we?

The salesman explained that 9G Tronic is getting rolled out now, with the benefit that it will allow 4 Motion in the UK. The previous gearbox has the front drive offtake interfering with RHD steering columns, but the new one doesn't.

So...... watch out for a 4WD E-Class before long.

Sorry can't see it. At present the 9G tronic has yet to go 4Matic with all 4matic transmissions still using the 7G transmission. In addition the 9G is still a conventional fore and aft layout with the engine so I can't see how they would get drive to the front axle without a transfer gearbox and front prop shaft/differential ? I think your salesman was confusing the forthcoming GLK which has a transverse engine gearbox layout and does have a different "on demand" type of 4matic system which can be used on RHD vehicles. :dk:
