Even though this was before I was born - it was too long before. It was a more innocent(if much more dangerous!) era that I wish I'd been around to see.

I was 13 at the time. I remember it very clearly. We accepted that this kind of thing was one of the risks that went with the job at the time.

Ye Gods 40 years ago today I was a small child being conveyed (by parents!) to Australia by ship.

Most likely would have been en route from Dakar to Cape Town.

I had circumnavigated the world one and a half times by ship in 1968, having been from my place of birth in New Zealand to the UK, then back to NZ then back to the UK again.

I don't even know if passenger ships sail that route any more.

He was my fathers hero. I remember the day he came in and said 'He's been killed.............' I didnt understand who but mum told me it was Jim Clark.
